Great place... Good Food

This place is great as a bar. Drinking here is affordable and fun. Too many legendary nights have begun here at 7 pm and ended on the following day.

Food isn't the main attraction for me at Leo's. It's a place we go to hang out, grab a few beers and by-the-by eat something.

Their pasta's are average, like most the food, including the starters. This place has vintage, it's been around since before I could legally drink, and quite a large foreigner crowd gets pulled in.

Personally, I prefer the upstairs seating unless it's epic weather in Mumbai.

Sea food at Concrete Jungle.... relatively speaking :-)

Nice place to be with friends, although it is lot congested and the space to represent the Mumbai concrete jungle.... once you are seated and ready to order, your journey starts to another place altogether.... The space constraint doesn't bother you, the service is good, the waiters offer good and fast service and the food is awesome... Whatever you order, it leaves a impression on you... to return.

Either alone or with friends and colleagues, this is a good place to spend some good time. Be there atlas once to have the experience of good food in congested place :-)

Beer Towers

You want some noise, head to Leopold Cafe at Colaba. This place is always full and that is what its identity is. A lovely place without doors and full of life.

The specialty of this place is beer which is served in big towers. They also give free peanuts. With the Beer we had chilly chicken which was the perfect combination.

Leopold cafes best than ever

The history attracts lots of people and that’s what attracted me here. Yes talking about 26/11. They have preserved all the spots and it still feel fresh. The pitchers are good, light music, great crowd and yum starters makes all the more reason to visit here. The prices are not that reasonble but its not high too. Do try their dessert please, its worth spending there.

Best hangout

Ordered a bottle of ice-cold Kingfisher beer to wash down the hearty, typical bar food chicken tikka, french fries, burgers that kind of thing. Surprisingly, the Chinese food is actually the better with chili peppers cant be beat, and the chicken-fried rice and the chili chicken are highly recommended.. The ownership has preserved bullet holes from the attack on its upstairs windows for people to see and snap pictures..

Cheers !

The hustle bustle of Colaba market is incomplete without this historic place. It's generally crowded and filled with lot of firangs. Leaving their unchallenged beer experience, the starters are a little overpriced but taste good. I love their desserts especially the strawberry mouse on the rack outside. Music could have been better but overall it's a nice place to hangout and to spend an evening here with friends.

Awesome place

One of my favourite places. What to say about his place. I have visited this place many times. This is one of the famous multi cuisine resto located in Colaba causeway. Veg and non veg dishes are available with different types of sauces. Blac bean sauce and oyster sauce and hong ong sauces. Whereas normal and common plates are also available here.

Always buzzing...

Leopold cafe is more than a restaurant. It's a great tourist attraction. Coming to food, they serve good Chinese. I ordered veg Hakka noodles with hot garlic sauce. Both the dishes were prepared well however, the quantity was insufficient for two people. I also tried the schezwan rice, which were ordinary. One of the best dishes on their menu, undoubtedly has to be grilled chicken sausages. The sausages are prepared with a spicy sauce and is extremely flavorful. They are famous for their Beer. They are worth every bit.

cool hangout

I occasionally like to have beer even though am not much of an alcohol lover but this is the ultimate place to have beer. It is always crowded with foreigners and that itself lends it a very cosmopolitan vibe. Must have the Tandoori chicken and pesto pasta which are both value for money meals in themselves. Go here with friends and sit for hours, and also sample various pastries and cheesecakes.

Leopold - for the experience!

Leopold is more than a pub. Being there is being part of history and grabbing a slice of history along with your beer. The place boasts of good music, great crowd and a long waiting list. You would be well advised to book a table in advance, especially on a weekend. The desserts are exquisite.

Must visit! Even if not for a beer!

There's only one...

The reason I like this place more than Mondegar is that there isn't any loud music blasting away and their focused totally on making sure you have a good time hanging out with friends. So the ambiance is just tables and chairs with the menu right there on table itself. Order beers, sausages and some chicken chilly and your ready to go.

Nice place

Yes, I agree that Leopold is highly overpriced for being a cafe cum bar. But who hasn't been here. First shop at Colaba and then drink a pint or a tower of beer to cool yourself down.
Leopold has a very fun environment, the place is mostly stormed with plenty of foreigners and equal number of Indians too. In all, it is a nice place.

More than indian crowd you will always find a lot of foreigners here! They have some really good continental food .. The pasta and the risotto is nice.. They also offer moghlai food .. The place is a bit expensive but what makes it special is its ambience and crowd.. You can just chill here with a couple of beers and also have a good time!

Nice place

A place similar to cafe mondegar but with worse lighting! Ever since it was mentioned in the novel 'Shantaram' and then the 26 november terrorist attacks happened,it has become even more popular...still a good place to spend some time drinking and eating with friends. try the chicken grilled sandwich,or the chicken pasta in pesto sauce! Have some very good desserts too. Service is not great and seating is very close and stuffy.

An institution to visit!

Another institution in Mumbai, almost always full, especially with foreigners! This is perhaps the most chilled out place where beer is a must have. I don’t drink but many of my friends do and we have spent quite some time chilling here. Be prepared to inhale loads of alcohol smell and smoke and simply enjoy the most chilled out side of Mumbai. I have tried a veg burger here and it is good enough. You will feel like you are sitting in a Goan shack, just overcrowded! Also they have some good desserts, cheesecakes and pastries worth trying. Basically don’t go here for food rather just for chilling with friends and drinking!

I love going here on a weekend but early because then there is no way you have any place to sit here. its always crowded. ALways.

The Classic Pub!!

This place needs no introduction, one of the most iconic cafes of Mumbai, located at the Colaba causeway. A must go destination by any tourist exploring Mumbai.

This place is known for its vibe, energy & great food.

The usual place for me on a Friday evening. It has great old age ambience, a classic pub kind of atmosphere, serves multi cuisine – Italian, Indian & Chinese.

Some of the must haves are – Tandoori chicken, fusilli Pesto Pasta, Hakka Mushroom, Veg. Burger, Paneer Tikka Masala, Garlic Nan & excellent Fish dishes.

Alcohol is moderately priced, best buy is to get a beer tower.

It is an excellent place to chill with friends.

Overrated, overhyped, overpriced and underdone

A failed attempt to re-visit the famous Elephanta caves and aimless strolling around Colaba brought me and my brother here. We primarily wanted a bottle of ThumsUp to quench our thirst, but though to go in as it was the famous 'Leopold Cafe'. It is opposite the Colaba Police Station and is hard to miss if you're in the right area.

Both of us felt a strange unease while entering as this was one of the places which terrorists had targeted during the attack on Mumbai on 26/11. A friendly greeting awaited us and we did ot have to wait much to get in, but were strictly told that the rea upstairs was 'closed'. A lot of Indians are told the same tale, so nothing new here, but we already anticipated it.

The area inside was extremely cramped and a couple of spots were hot enough to cook you up. It seemed there was no interest in making this situation better. The crowd are fine, but limited air ventilation is a problem.

To the menu now. As I have written earlier, all we wanted is to quench our thirst with a nice cola, and even if we would have been hungry, our hunger pangs would have disappeared after looking at the prices...overpriced is not the word I tell you. So we settled for a club sandwich and a couple of glasses of cold coffee. The damages: over Rs 600!

The service is pretty quick, that I'll give them. But after paying so much, one does not want to feel having dined at an udipi place - eat quickly/pay quickly/get out quickly. Also, the quality of the stuff is OK, you'll find better at several places in the area.

Head to Cafe Mondegar for a better experience, 'cause this one is certainly not worth it.

Always a pleasant experience

Was in Colaba Causeway, where we shopped till we dropped, doing a recee of the entire stretch. We didn't think much and settled for Leo's as our place for lunch. We made our selves comfortable in one of the center tables at the ground level (Have never quite warmed up to the upper air-conditioned section). We didn't have to wait at all to be seated. Ordered for two mugs of beer and a plate of chicken sausages and salted peanuts that came complimentary with the beer. It was a good start and perfect to beat the afternoon sweltering heat. The next to arrive was crispy chicken - chicken strips stir fried with an amalgamation of Chinese spices and sprinkled with red chillies. The flavour of the spices were induced deep into the flesh of the chicken and was an explosion of flavours. We also ordered for a Barbeque Beef that came along with a side of toasted Garlic bread, again marvelous. The latter was suggested by the server, and it was good judgement by him. Contrary to the other reviews on this page thrashing the service, food and prices, we had quite a nice experience. The service was infact very quick and they always had a smile on when serving. The damages at the end of our meal for 3 was Rs 1,368. A bang for buck we thought. The people tarnishing the image of this restaurant need to give it a second chance, its not all that bad after all.

Feel like an alien in your own country

I love this place.

Yes. Sounds contradicting to the title but that's the case. Here the staff (mostly) discriminate Indians. They clearly prefer foreigners over Indians. Even if they are well-mannered, polite and good to them.

For a moment I thought I was some 8 legged four headed sultan of some crazy-land. And mind you I go there at at least once in a month.

I don't think frequency should matter. Hospitality should be one for all. Besides, I don't see value for money.

Oh no, you go ahead. Experience it yourself, perhaps you might get lucky if they serve you happily.

Leopold Cafe Colaba Causeway, Mumbai. Hype? Real?

Leopold Café. Since 1871. Colaba Causeway. Must-see for the traveler in Mumbai. Over-crowded at all times. Hyped. Real.

Yeah, all of the above runs through your mind as you are showed to your table here and you victoriously grab a chair. For how many can get into Leopold with having to wait outside for that coveted seat? We did and thanked our stars. For, the four of us were famished and could eat the pillars, ceilings, fans by then. The menu card was most eclectic – burgers, biryani, pastas, fresh juices, coffee. Multi cuisine, you say? Eclectic, I emphasize. An eclectic menu for the eclectic faces around me – the two boys at the corner table looked like they were trying to write the screenplay of a movie. Why else would they be looking at the patrons intently and jotting down their notes? And then there were the 2 ladies behind us, who looked like they tore away from a society do to have coffee here. The pretty young girl eating a pastry and sipping coffee with her boyfriend. The bunch of foreigners, wearing salwar kameezes, and trying to absorb all that is India. And of course the four of us, bound by a common love, shopping ;-)

So in case you are not dying of hunger, like we were, simply chill, relax, order a drink — Jayant tells me that their Eiffel Tower beer that is served in a tower-like container is amusing. We stuck to mosambi juices though!! And stay engrossed in your animated conversations with your friends. There’s one more thing you could do. Observe the place and try to figure out, Why the hype?

Leopold Café is all that you would have heard about or read about. The place to be seen in, the place to be ‘four-squared’!! Food is good more or less. But seriously, how many people come here for food? They come here for their I-have-arrived moment.

So in case you are not dying of hunger, like we were, simply chill, relax, order a drink — Jayant tells me that their Eiffel Tower beer that is served in a tower-like container is amusing. Not that great food

I visited this place twice and had completely diffferent experience. 1st time when we sat on ground floor didnt like the place that much reason being too much cramped for space, too much noise and felt place runs because of historical importance only. But second time was completely different experience when we sat on 1st floor. Place had nice music playing, good ambiance, proper sitting arrangement and all. good place to drink but not that high rated for food

Good for beer, avoid food!

I was with my dad in town last Friday to watch a play at NCPA. He wanted to go have beer post that and we zeroed in on Leopold. Surprisingly, we got a table within 10 minutes. We ordered a pitcher of beer, sesame chicken and chello kebabs. I've heard a lot about their chello kebabs and wanted to try them but was disappointed. There was no flavour of anardana in rice. The sesame chicken too was dry and we asked for a sauce with it he pointed towards the bottle of ketchup. Anyway, after asking again he bought a chilli and soy sauce.

I would say go there for beer if you must but avoid eating a meal there. And if you do then stick to regulars like biryani.

Amazing buzz, not that much on food

Have been waiting to be here ever since I have been in Mumbai.. and finally last weekend I got the opportunity. Having heard so much about it, was hoping to find it full.. and it was! Situated on the main road, it is hard to miss.

The structure will not impose a likeable effect on being seen from outside, but once you are inside, you know why it is so famous. Saturday night at 9, it was full to the brim with more than 20 people in waiting. It is large group friendly, and since we were just 2 people, we were given a place in just 15 minutes.

The place exerts enthusiasm and buzz. Waiters running around taking and serving orders, people having a good time.. You can see towers and pitchers of beer on almost every table. The crowd is pretty good too.

Now coming to the food.. We ordered 2 glasses of beer with french fries and paneer tikka. The beer was served immediately with peanuts, followed by Panner Tikka. Paneer was soft and the marination was quite delicious. Served with coriander and mint chutney, which was pretty nice. The fries came in way later, and we ordered 2 glasses of beer again. The french fries were a little let down. Though good in taste, they were a little too much oily. The service is quite quick and attentive.

We ended the meal with a red velvet pastry. Not the best I have had, but decent enough. The cream could have been less sweet and lighter.

For 4 glasses of beer, 2 appetizer and 1 dessert, the bill came to 1400 bucks. Not worth spending on food, but bang on atmosphere.

Nice place, Amazing history, Good Ambiance

Cafe Leopold is an institution in itself like many other joints in South Mumbai. I had heard about this place a few times but never been to it until i read the book Shaantaram. That book got me intrigued with this place and i dragged my friends over there from Vileparle. I came over here with a couple of my mates in 2008 and since then i keep coming back few times a year with the guys. This place has a entirely different feel to it, it feels like being transported back in time or being transported to a place like Goa. Out on street you can see the hustle bustle and pace of Mumbai passing by but in there its completely different. Their service is prompt, waiters to the best are courteous and well mannered. There is only one thing i wish would be different about this place, well 2 things actually. The Food - their menu is not very impressive, only a few dishes are good and rest all are average at the best. The table arrangement- They have tried to squeeze as many tables as they can in the area they have which makes each table very close to the other.
All said anyone visiting Mumbai has to go to this place, its not too expensive and its an institution like i said before. You can still see the Bullet holes in the walls n glasses from the 26/11 terrorists had opened fire in the Leopold's ...

Best Chilly Chicken but beware of Service Charge

Go in a big gang and order the pitcher of draft beer that comes like a tower and is a delight! All time favorite dishes have to be Chilly Paneer and Chilly Chicken Dry. It tastes the same every single time you eat it and you can never get enough of it. Fish n Chips at Leos is fantastic but do ask for extra tartar sauce. Just beware of the credit card slip. Service charge is added in the bill but when they get your card slip, they don't give the bill so most people land up adding a tip to the bill which is over and above the service charge.

Mumbai & The Classics.

Don't go ga ga about the food, booze or the service etc. Just feel the raw energy in this place, you will feel Mumbai in its true element here more than anywhere else, the people, zing in the air, the atmosphere, that what this is all about, simply order a BBQ chicken or an omlette pav if your really hungry, sip on a pint of beer, have a liitle chat with your friends and you will not regret this place, its more of a heritage spot than a swanky hang out, this place has seen everything, the attacks, the bad days the good days and is still standing proud....this is not just another hang out, this is place that has heart and soul, this place is a classic.

Mondy’s Evil Twin

Leopold’s committed reputation suicide when it served a tower full of flat beer to a beer lover. Although an old joint, Leopold’s has been on the decline for quite some time now. The place is dirty, the food is sloppily made and presented, and the beer sucks. Last time I went there, I had ordered the fried wanton with garlic sauce (oily to the limit!) and the Beef Teriyaki, which was very nice, probably the only good thing on the table. Furthermore, what really made me unhappy was their audacity to monetize the 26/11 terror attacks. And no, I’m not taking about the bullet marks being preserved, I’m talking about the bullet marks being printed on mugs and T-shirts and being sold! This place might be a hit with foreigners as a pick up joint, but most people I know don’t want to swing by for a second visit. And yes, it's way overpriced and over-hyped.

Overrated

Cafe leopold one of the best places to hangout in Mumbai left me disappointed.
I had been there with 7 people and we were left waiting for half an hour.
After getting the table, the waiter was no where to be seen.all the waiters were busy entertaining the foreigners.
To be honest only the foreigners enjoy their service the most.
After being on the table for about 15mins, the waiter gave us the menu and just disappeared.again after 15mins he came, took the order and vanished.
finally the food arrived..the quantity was huge and the price is reasonable.
The chicken fried rice had raw chicken..it wasn't cooked properly!
chicken chilly gravy had watery gravy..gross!
Chicken crispy was good.
Food was quite okay..
Service was bad..
Overall experience was quite okay..
I wouldn't visit this cafe again! Not worth it.

Overhyped is an understatement

Cafe Leopold..., last time i went there, i assumed i ordered the wrong stuff (indian; not to mention the minimal portion sizes at exorbitant rates) so i went there again ydy to have the beef burger and the chilly beef.

Chilly Beef had huge chunks of meat and cooked really well. It was good. Except for the most obvious taste of aginomoto. Presentation was shit, Even Baghdadi presented food better.

And then had the Beef burger..., already cut into 4 quarters, 'okay' sized burger was served. The burger patty was (sigh) worse than cutlet meat. And the over generous serving of mayo made it pathetically gooey and totally uninteresting. There was a weird sweetness to it as well. Waste of money. The fries served with it weren't golden brown either.

The waiter suggested us to have Red pepper beef as (according to him) it was awesome. As the dish was served, it looked exactly like the chilly beef, with comparatively smaller chunks of meat (looked more like the kerala beef roast, but tasted NOTHInG like it) with the obvious (indian) chinese taste. Nothing spectacular, just ok.

Not worth the prices they charge. Also, considering it is always crowded and the staff count being little below 'required', the service isn't that great.

I would go there just to show the non-Mumbaikars what 'media' can do to hype up a little-over-mediocre standard restaurant and that's about it.

Not impressed!

Ok, so Leopold is more or less like a Mumbai monument now. I have been there a couple of times and honestly I don't understand what the hype is all about. Yes, the place is big, yes it has good music but that's IT. I didn't think the food was THAT great and the only thing I have ever noticed is that foreigners get a higher preference over desi customers here. The place has two levels, one is on the ground floor which has no AC and another on top which is much smaller but is air conditioned and TIGHTLY packed. It doesn't have a dance floor but that doesn't stop people from dancing (I have no issues with that!). The service is slow and many a time, they'll simply forget you're there. The food is nice. Not bad, not AMAZING. Overall, fun place but not somewhere I'd go again. I prefer Monde's.

BEER BEER BEER !!

I feel its the history which brings people here !! The ambiance okay but if you want to chill with friends and having beer simultaneously, this is the place for your group !! The prices have increased a lot in the past 2 years and now I feel it comes under the expensive category !! You can easily see the bullet marks on the walls which makes this place historical !! As far as food is concerned, its average !!

HAVEN for BEERHolics !!

Wonderful place...noisy ...perpetually crowded, mostly firangs !!
a Sure HIT for BEER Lovers ....Food wise Strictly OK, but that is understandable as No body goes to Cafe Leopold just to HOG !! Best Place to hang out with bunch of friends.
Try to go in the afternoon or early eve n then continue sitting or else it gets pretty crowded n u will need to compromise on the seating.

Ambience - Classy OLD School Charm without much or RATHER No changes since the time i remember it almost 15 years ago

Go here to meet people, not eat

This has always been a place for foreigners to meet each other. After the 26/11 attacks the place became a household name all over the country and now Indians too flock there in large numbers. It's pleasant to sit there and gaze over Colaba - as it's one of the rare bars that is open to the street. A pitcher of beer comes in a tall attention-grabbing tube with a tap attached. So by all means, go there to spend an evening and chat over a drink. The food is terrible, don't even bother with that.

A tavern as it should be.

This is one awesome place to have a couple of beers, infact this is the only place in Mumbai where beer is served in an environment it is supposed to be served. I dont know about the food or about any other drinks, because I have never had anything but the beer! The taste is same, but the feeling is different. It is old, not fancy and that is the best part. The service is awesome, the people are very friendly. The place is simple, very simple, that is why it brings one so much joy! Go alone, with a date, a couple of friends, family doesn't matter, this is for everyone, accepts everyone. It is not properly furnished, you can see the damages of 26/11 firing as well, and that is a very sanguine feeling somehow! Its is a tavern as the gods of taverns want them to be!

Landmark in Colaba...Leopold

Leopold is a landmark in Colaba. You love it, you hate it but you can't ignore it is the case here. Close to 150 years old, this cafe is buzzing with activity all through the day. Foreigners are dominant than locals.

Ambiance is like any other cafe but Leopold retains the old British world charm. Plus to add to the mystique around, there are the bullet marks on the walls reminding everybody of the terror attacks of 2008. It's quite a tourist attraction since then.

The seating area is crammed since they have tried to accommodate as many tables and chairs as they could. Tables are so close that if you are quiet you can actually over-hear conversations at other tables (provided you understand German/Russian/French) ;)

Service is decent, but when it gets crowded, it gets difficult to catch the attention of the servers. Preference given to foreigners for obvious reasons.

Food is the best part. I love garlic bread, fish n chips, Chicken Burger, Stroganoff and Kung Pao Chicken...my regulars! Draught Beer and Beer Tower are popular and on almost every foreinger's table.

Food is slightly expensive but I'd say for the kind of aura Leopold holds, its worth it! A meal for 2 would be around Rs 800 (without drinks).

Ok Experience

I had been to Leopold wid my fiance on a sunday evening. He ordered a beer and i sticked to Ice Tea. Ice tea was a bit bitter which they replaced after i complained about it.

For starters we ordered Chilly Cheese toast which was yummy with generous cheese over it. The only thing was that i felt it was a bit overpriced. The main course was Paneer tikka masala wid Naan. The gravy was superb wid fried pieces of paneer which i dont like.

Overall great place to chill wid friends. :)

Looking forth to trying Chinese next tym i get der.

A lil too expensive for my taste

I'm going to be very honest here - yes, its got a good vibe going on a place you'd like to enjoy your drink at, but it certainly not the cheapest place to go to. A pint of beer is 190 or so. A bottle is 255. Draft is of course a lil cheaper. The food on the other hand is where it gets expensive. A veg burger will set you back 300! And thats at a place without aircon and cramped seating. A plate of potato wedges goes for about 300 too.

Even if you're white, it's not so great really...

I read a lot of these comments about how they're treating white people better... I dunno about that.. it might be true- but honestly, I'm white and the service at Leos is mediocre verging on rude even if you are white.I've been there a few times, in the course of 3 visits to Mumbai since 2010. The beer is beer-like... the food is what you'd expect in a bar... not great, but it keeps you drinking. The only reason I go there is because it's one of the few places that, as a white person, you can go and pretty much guarantee to have other tourists to chat to. (Yeh, I'd be delighted to chat with Indians, but honestly the only ones who seem to want to talk to me outside of work are touts...) I certainly *do not* go to Leos for the food or the service. But who goes to a bar for good food?

Sunshinewali Jagah

This is the place where my fiancee had her first sip of beer during our courting days. It will always hold a special place in my heart. They say Leopold reflects what Mumbai is. I disagree. It does not. If you want a place to reflect Mumbai, go to any of the small eateries in Lower Parel or Dadar. But if you want to be the yuppie Mumbaite, then Leopold is the place to be. Glass of chilled beer in hand with some of their highly recommended(read mouthwatering) food on the table, a quick conversation with a firang on a nearby table or a loud conversation with your friends; who would want anything else.

Advice - go dressed casually but in expensive looking clothes or go the bermuda way and look chic. Not a place for sloppy dressing unless you are a foreigner. Service is a bit slow, but the ambience and the historical relevance (ohh really?) of this place makes up for it.

Overdue - Review

Went there with a few friends quite some time ago, Sat on the mezzanine floor, Pub Like, too loud for me, But the Food was awesome, I would not call it over priced at all, The prices are high ,but the quality and the portions are really good, Had a few chicken starters, some prawns and followed by a Sweet Corn Chicken Soup, peppered by a few large Baccardis. Prawns are to die for, the Best I have had so far (Chinese - probably Prawns Chilli.). I could not believe the soup, it was practically a meal by its self. Great experience - Loud though, next time I will try the ground level. No Service problems at all, I would acknowledge the Good Service

Truth

ITs true that its located there since ages, but the truth is it was a joint for sailors who landed in Mumbai, it was a notorious place.
My Mom used to live in Colaba during the 70s and 80s.
She and her sister used to walk out of regal and stop at Leo's for a Cold Drink.
The crowd would letch.
The say there was basic food served that time.

They saw Leopolds after nearly 30 years and they were honestly disappointed. SO was i, No one cared to serve, i know our plea and comments won't change anything about that place, but it would be nice if youz were nicer.

Overhyped. OverPriced

If anybody has cashed on terrorism it has to be this place. Leopold's is one cafe where you'll find more foreigners than Indians on any given day courtesy lonely Planet and 26/11. Its an Old looking cafe, true to its "since 1861" image. The food is mediocre, nothing great. The only unique thing would be its Beer towers. The service is very poor. The stewards are more concerned about the people standing outside then they are for the people being served. So, it's a cafe following a fast food strategy ( I wouldn't be surprised if this is the reason for their mediocre quality of food). But the most strikingly unpleasant thing is their prices which are exorbitantly high for the service n food being offered. Burgers going out for Rs.450 in a Non- airconditioned quasi fast food joint !!! But its does not really matter, As they say " Allah Meharban to Banda Pehalwan!" so is Leopold.

Mondys is better

There are two ways of looking at this joint; one is after considering its history, its long heritage and it being one of the spots for the terrorist attacks in 2008. While taking in the happy noise and laughter, your eyes may meet the bullet marks that the walls here still bear.

On the other hand, you may consider it more analytically and rationally based on food, quality of service and ambiance. This place is frequented by celebs. Thanks to its mention in the Lonely Planet magazine, it has become a mecca for hippies/backpackers.

The place is a bit dark and could use some live/ambient music, albeit the crowd makes enough noise to fills your ears.

The food is well, okish. We ordered a pasta, Fussili Alfredo (Rs 370) that tasted brilliant. The Schezwan Chop Suey (Rs 300) was not very soothing to our palate, though the serving portion was impressive.

The range of beer beats Mondys, with a variety of domestic and imported brands. You could also try the choclatey Mocha Frappe (Rs 70) or the occasional non drinkers could hold a Fresh Lime Soda (Rs 55).

All in all, this place is synonymous with Mumbai's nightlife and should definitely be visited atleast once. But there are other places in and around Colaba that deserve equal limelight.

Wanna Try, Recipe called ‘’Disaster’’

Having grown up in the vicinity I’ve always had high regards for the place. it proudly boasts ‘Since 1871’
Back in my hey days late 90 it was a simple yet a nice to chill and enjoy your tower (Beer) Thought I’d revive my old days on a rainy Saturday Evening and decided to visit the place and chose Leo's Square, still donno why the heck they call it a ''square''.
We ordered thai Curry and rice, Please allow me describe the preparation and service sequence. Steam Rice - There was no steam in the rice, it was ice cold just flown in in from tundra Land ,it tasted stale or perhaps it could have been a left over from another table or chefs(sorry to insult the world Chef, the guy must've been kitchen helper who prepared it ).
Thai Curry - ''Wow'', thanks to my hospitality skills am able to judge the dish correctly, in fact i figured a new way to make Thai Curry after ordering it here , take water or chicken stock, add lot of cornflower, throw in some multicolored peppers, for a tangy taste squeeze in at least 4 lemons, serve it cold like a gazpacho. when asked where is the lemongrass in it .. the waiter looks at me as if ..i asked him to summon his chef.. sorry i had to use it again.. cook.
Chicken S/w - Please take my advice if the owner ever reads this, Get a Sandwich guy from road side to do your s/w section, there are plenty available outside church gate, am sure he would do better job, perhaps get u some revenue for serving good sandwich alteast.

Service - when i voiced my concern to the server, he was quick to answer a standard quote, staright from his SOP Manual (Standard operation Procedure), i cannot change, or cancel sir .. Next line was it will be charged to me sir.. (Now that's very inhumane) and what a brilliant way to teach your guys, it’s just amazing
Please, i wish you luck with restaurant. you are doing a great thing by putting up and being there since 1871, least of all please do justice to your place you should be proud of your place don’t abuse your heritage and your customers,
i see lot of foreigners with their backpacks at your place, who come by with great expectations with their 'Lonely planet' and Frommers...please do not ever serve your thai curry to them, if you still do please keep some doctors or an ambulance service on standby, we don't want our guests of our country to be food poisoned, for the meal you served and of course charged them for it
Sorry guys i gave desserts a miss. didn’t want it to be paid by the waiter atleast

Our meal was a dissater, the only saving grace was the draught beer, which i concur its still good.

Super Food, Avg service....

Being a teetotaler, i was initially apprehensive of the food and the ambiance, but a visit to this place (on a weekday night, mind you) changed my views of a place like this...

Entered at around 2330 and found the place bustling with a mix of ppl from all over the world... good start... the waiters are a little lax, but i guess that's what ppl expect from them when they are here to drink/eat and spend time...

Had veg food that included an awesome chilly cheese sandwich, one of the best i have ever had in this city, followed by a lovely pasta in white sauce... though it was good, it just fell short of great... decent quantity, slightly overpriced (until u remember the place you are in...South Mumbai, oh come on now, you can still get the price down a bit...)... The service can surely get a little bit better...

Overall: Great Food, Lovely Ambiance (btw, i sat below), Ok-ok service, can always be better priced :-)

The good times and the Bad times..

I went there with a friend, one night and we thankfully did not have to wait much.. If there are only two people, the "concealed" top floor is mostly available.. What I did not like, was the wait.. The waiters don't really pay much attention to you, once the order is taken.. And if you want to order something else, better do it when they're serving you, or else they disappear and reappear only with the bill.. As a whole, I had a good enough time, thanks to the company I had..

It definitely is aweful now!!

Have been going here for years, but on my last visit (after a long time) i realised the the owners have attempted to kill the hen laying he golden eggs. Food that tastes like anything ordinary has been priced over Hard rock legendary burger. The place is always packed inspite of the stupid "taste to price ratios". And people still pour in jus cos it displays 26/11 bullet marks on wall. Seems like someone really milked the popularity gained after the T-attacks.

I really wish it would return to its old self, its old charm. But, I know it won't. This only means I am outta this place for a long long time. Fellow Indians and even mumbai hungry foreigners please give this one a skip.

Was a regular at Leo`s during my college days(5 yrs back), but after consistently being disappointed with the service and food now I dont even think of going there... Food is still OK, but a road side thella would give you better service that Leo`s. The waiters just suck up to the foreigners. They charge you insanely and then you dont even get the service you kinda expect from such a place.

They serve horrible cocktails at an exorbitant rate... Though the beer is always nice and fresh...

During its heydays, it was surely the place to be but not certainly not NOW.

Best place ever

I love this place and love the food. Especially their Chicken Chilly Dry. My favourite restaurant ever.

The reason it gets a 2 is because they have astronomically jacked up the prices. It is sheer ridiculousness to charge Rs. 375 for a Chicken Chilly Dry. I don't think I can go there again and enjoy as much as I used with such crazy prices. Their portions have also reduced and it just seems really unethical on the part of the management.

As mentioned in other reviews, Indians have always received secondary treatment here. It is deplorable.

Good Food for Indian with Indian Salaries

A Sincere request to the owners/management ,

Have been enjoying your food and Ambiance for time immemorial.Would like to thank the whole team for all yummy and finger licking food that i my family and friends have enjoyed on many rainy and hungry nights.
But i am deeply disturbed by all the latest review that re being posted for there has been a underlying snob/racist attitude towards your Indian patrons for some time now.
If the management has not noticed it this should be right signal that all is not well.

And now about the prices , I Understand as a Entrepreneur it is not my prerogative as a diner to question the Steep prices taking into consideration inflation , Salaries and taxes.
The current prices are just not there, its good for a expat backpacker to tick on his lonely planet to do list , for us "locals brown skinned" who used to patronize your joint on a regular basis it is just not affordable.

Maybe you can open another joint down in the suburbs still with no A/C will do but please keep earthly prices and Indian tip friendly waiters.

I don't have any personal grudges , just love the place a lot you can refer to my older posting for the same place.

and if pigs had wings they could fly..............

Stale Food at Nights !

While all of you watched an eventful ENG-IRE WC Match, I was faced with a strange attitude and hints of racism at Cafe Leopolds.
So Dinner with the family, after a Movie.
Get a cocky waiter(hailing from NE-India).
Ordered
- Regular Cold water:"Sorry only available bottled..filter broken"
- 3 plates of Chicken Curry and Rice(its the best in Bombay I've had):Order arrives, we eat our first bite "Curry is stale and chicken is uncooked" we tell him.
W:"Sorry I do not understand. No has complained about this. You know this is Chicken Curry you ordered".
"Please ask the manager/cook to come and rectify this".
W:"No one will come and rectify this, I'm sorry".
Understandably, its pissing off.And ofcourse he gets a peace of our mind.
Manager comes, does not apologise, takes it away to rectify it and returns with 2(TWO not THREE).
Curry is okay, Chicken is still not cooked completely.
Piece de Resistance - Waiter says sorry the Chicken Curry was from the Morning !

I'm speechless.
I'm pretty sure there are more experiences like these but maybe we were too conscious of speaking up or just never bothered.
Earnest Request : Can we not make this an attitude and settle for such hogwash !

Great food, old world Colaba charm

Amazing place with great food, the quality of which has not diminished in the least since I was there last (Fussili with red wine sauce and chicken, was an item I tried once again), with a great ambience. The service is not bad, but typical of a place that is full most of the time, and this one sure is. Perhaps they can increase their staff count on occasion at least, so people will not have a reason to cite that in their rants. The other problem I found - there is a section on top, that seems out-of-bounds to most patrons. That kind of put a dampner on my afternoon, since I noticed people who know someone or the other make their way upstairs. But since that aspect is not a biggie, I still would go back and dine downstairs in the future. And yep, it helps that friends of mine saw Gregory David Roberts at Leopold after Shantaram became a huge coffee table topic. ;-)

And the manager even showed us obviously fake receipts for these. This has happened to other friends of mine on several occasions as well. We've just stopped going here despite fond memories of hanging out here during college days. The place has lost its charm anyway and the food is pretty terrible now.

terrible service, terrible food, messy place

Yesterday, I went to Leopold with my gf. We have been to Leopold couple of times and experience before was okay (not bad). We waited couple of minutes for table for 2. Place was crowded as usual. Finally we got table for 2 in corner side. There was water spilled on the floor and floor was very wet, it looked like it was recently cleaned but not properly dried. My sport shoe was slipping, so I hold hand of my girl friend and helped her sit to make sure she don't fall in those high hells.

Place was dirty and it felt like I am sitting in some dabha. We was sitting there for 5 minutes and nobody came ahead to ask us for order or water or anything. Finally I asked passing waiter to call captain. He arrived promptly and asked for order. I asked him for spicy chicken kebab and he responded like take anything. I asked him which one is spicy he suggested go for tikka kebab. I asked him if they have any other spicy kebab in menu, he said that's the only one he can think of. Ok, I ordered glass of draught beer for me and Cocktail juice for my gf, chicken chilly and chicken reshmi kabab.

He bought beer in 1 minute but no juice for lady friend!. It was kind of rude to drink beer while she wait for her juice, but she asked me to ahead anyway. He should have bought them both together. Draught beer was HOT (not cold enough) and tasted like soda without gas. There was very less bubbles and it looked like it was kept open for an hour before serving!. He served no complements (they serve peanuts or cheese biscuits as complementatory) and I have to ask him to bring complements with drink!.

He never asked for water!

Finally juice arrived for my gf and 5 minutes after chicken chilly which was followed by chicken reshmi kabab. While chicken chilly was good, chicken reshmi kabab was cold and chicken was very hard and over cooked. It looked like it was cooked 1 hour before and he just microwave it and served us chicken. Waiter who brought chicken also left it on table without any spoons and he did not bother to serve chicken to any plate. anyway, I have to ask him to bring spoons and some tissue papers on table!!!!!. He promptly bought tissues and spoons!. Waiters behavior was very rude and it seems like he was in very much hurry and have no respect for guests!

Finally, after seeing terrible chicken we decided to leave but before leaving we have to use wash rooms. To my surprise, washroom was very very small, very dirty, ladies room and men's room was in same washroom. It was very very messy and looks like washroom at railway station.

To make all things worst, there was waiting to use washroom, while I was waiting for washroom which is located just near to kitchen, I was looking at kitchen. It was disaster. It was very tidy and messy and very unclean. There was 40+ rotis cooked and was kept open, it looks like they prepare food in bulk and they just heat it and serve to guests.

After seeing kitchen, I felt very terrified and prayed god help me from not getting sick. After awful time, we decided never come back to this place again.

Its sad to see leopold ruining its reputation like this. They should improve there standards and keep place clean. May be too much media coverage after recent terrorists attacks have bought them too many customers hence they really don't care.

UR INDIAN...UR SHIT...the leopold real tag line

the topic of my review , is exactly what i felt on my lst visit to this stupid place. on confronting a issue abt a certain dish i ordered, the manager ( a gora) talked me as if, i belonged to a race of slaves in his country. the staff , treat u as if they r feeding hungry children at a refugee camp in somalia.
IF U R INDIAN , BE PREPARED TO GET INFERIOR TREATMENT....actually , there are 12647567.... restaurants in bombay that serve better food, serve u well, treat u with a smile, have the same ( no!!...much ,much much better) environment. y take the risk of spoiling ur outing.? i WILL NEVER EVER STEP INTO THIS PLACE AGAIN, ( im sure they will accept only foreign gurrencies in sometime). I WILL ALSO STRONGLY RECOMMEND AGAINST THIS DUMP ( RUN BY SNOBS), TO ANYONE , WHO WANTS TO HAVE A GOOD TIME

Expensive but Excellent

Food is very very tasty, am not sure how long back you guys have been to this place but it has gone through a major change with the taste of food for sure.

I've always had a liking for this place but had mostly gone only for beers and short snacks unlike this one time i decided to go there for a quick meal. We ordered Chicken Stroganoff and the quantity was more than one person could eat. A whole lotta chicken with a good quantity of rice and some vegetables. Food tasted freshly cooked and very warm to eat. Was more than enough food as we had an appetizer too.

This time around I wanted to try another dish too so ordered the Barbecue Chicken and a portion of Garlic Bread; even the bread was so perfectly crisp but soft that we enjoyed every piece of it. The barbecue chicken was delightfully tasty with freshness and aroma. Had another friend join us so ordered the Chicken Stroganoff again as it was an excellent choice earlier. Our meal totally cost us Rs.1060/- along with a couple soft drinks. Each good dish costs between 300-400 so that's pricier than some of the previous reviews but total value for money as the taste of food is better than many restaurants even nicer one's.

Pathetic

Well went there for the 2nd time we usually prefer mondegar...this time 1st we didnt get a place to sit and had to sit by the bar,we were told we'll get a table in 5 mins,we kept waiting ,the people who came after us got a table and we kept sitting ,only after we spoke to the managent again after waiting for 30 mins for a table that we got one.
We ordered Fish and chips which we had ordered last time aswell. This time they were pathetic. It had no salt in it and the fish was stinking. We told the waiter that it bdoesnt have any salt init and he said ,it comes without salt, fish and chips are saltless.I've know certain food is bland but heard for the 1st time that it comes saltless.Told the waiter to change the dish ,he said order cannot be changed we had to have the saltless fish.Overall it was a very bad experience. The beer which we get in the market for 80 bucks they were selling it for 220 bucks which is quite high.Well wouldnt want to go there again.

Absolutely Amazing

From the time when I read Shantaram, this place has been on my agenda of "places to visit" when I go to Bombay. The opportunity to visit Leopold's came last weekend when I spent two days in Bombay. I asked my taxi driver to drop me here for lunch and, after peering carefully at the sign to make sure that I am in the right place, I walked inside and sat down at a table for two. I was hesitant to enter, after having read the below reviews on "racism" but thankfully I faced nothing of the sort. The waiter couldn't have more polite and nice. He pointed out the menus, carefully stuck to the table, beneath its glass top and then left me to make my choices. He however hovered very close and the minute I looked up, appeared and noted down my order - Pot Rice with Beef, Beef with Black Garlic Sauce and, a Fruit Lassi with Banana. My drink arrived almost at once and I settled down happily to drink it and look around me. The place is lovely, with pictures lining the walls and there is a fair amount of space between each set of furniture. My food arrived in less than 20 minutes and I slowly began to munch my way through it. Being alone, I finished a little over a quarter of both dishes, before feeling full. I did manage to get through the whole glass of Lassi though. Meal over, I called for the bill and after paying the rather exorbitant rate mentioned on it, I strolled over to speak to the very young and cute-looking floor manager. I wanted to ask him where the bullet holes were located in the restaurant since I wanted to photograph them. He very kindly took me all round the restaurant and showed me the bullet holes and also stood by patiently while I photographed each. I then thanked him and left. My views of the place are that it is in an ok location, has a fairly nice ambience (well it's actually just a simple cafe cashing in on Shantaram and the 2008 hype), nice food which is served in huge quantites, a mixed crowd and, lovely service.

Racist Attitude

Well, I know we all value inflow of foreign currency into the country, but Leopold Cafe made me experience what I usually go through in Goa, the Brown Skin Attitude. Shantaram went a long way in hyping this place up, but ALAS!!! the ground reality is below:

In all the times, I have visited Leopolds, I can count on my fingertips the number of times I have had good service meted to me upstairs. The captains wholly dedicate their attention and service to the "Firangs" that frequent the place here. Orders are given faster, their drinks come faster and the attitude towards them is way better than what I have received in the past.

On 1 occasion, a German tourist with his better half, seated behind me, who ordered 15 mins after I had placed my order, received their order; and I had to wait another 15 mins till my drinks arrived. By then, their drinks had arrived along with finger food.

If you have to place an order in the evening post 7pm. ALL THE BEST. Guess you will have to scream TERRORIST in there to get their attention. The captains and the waiters are least bothered about the normal folks who come here and concentrate wholly on the Expats and Firangs who are present.

If the management is reading this review, kindly note the below points:

1) YOU ARE IN INDIA!!!! guess you have forgotten that. Being one of the oldest places in Colaba, this kind of amateurish behavior of your staff doesnt say a lot about the kind of mentality they have. Your an Indian, respect your fellow people. All they care for is to make sure "Foreigners" are happy and we have to twiddle our thumbs in the hope of good service. Unprofessional and a lacklusture attitude towards you guests.

2) In the hospitality industry, your guests are your bread and butter. You are in existence because we come there and we pay. If you think Indians cant pay as well as others, wake up dude

3) Think it is high time you wake up and address this issue. Being made to feel like an outcast in your own country is the most pathetic feeling to have. I guess you wont understand the same till you go through it. If you are so inclined to be more hospitable and wanna give better service to only foreigners, then my advice and suggestion, convert Leo's Square into a Firang only zone, since thats all you care for.

Rating:

- 0 for the service and staff attitude

- 2 for the ambience. You DJ believes we all are deaf and for heavens sake when he is not there.. PLAY A GODDAMN NEW CD. I have the playlist memorized and me and my girl have a competition who can remember the next song in line.. Like jeez. and this is been happening for over a year now

- 3 for the food. I like your food. Especially the Beef Chilly Dry,
the best in the city

- 2.5 on the overall experience

I sincerely hope if the Management of Leopold Cafe ever read this, request them to put in more time into training your staff to attend all customers and not be RACIST. Are we in an apartheid regime in India?

For your convenience, have shared this feedback with numerous regular patrons here and most of them share my view. Staff attitude reflects management's attitude. Thats all I have to say. Just hoping the next time I do visit Leopold ( and I havent in a while due to this racist attitude) some corrective measures will be taken.

the below comments posted by fellow burrpers cant be wrong.. just backs what i have just written down.. and frankly I can personally assure you that here are tons of people who have had the same experience. I would love the Management to reply to the same. I am sure and supremely confident that the Management doesnt EVEN bother to read. WHAT CAN THEY REPLY!

Hyped, especially after 26/11

Ground Floor of this cafe is like a shack, no AC with Victorian age ceiling fans trying to squeak out the last few days of their lives. If you have been to an Indian Coffee House in any corner of the country, you will find a lot of similarity - the only difference is that there are a lot of pale skins hanging around in skimpy clothes. Beer Tower indeed is a good concept, but you really wont like it when the tower is cracked and put together with Scotch Tapes and the bottom of the seems to have a thick layer of moss. the taps also leak some time. Food is good, table service not so good if you are a non-Pale Skin (thats how I like to put it). Tables are greasy and make sure to fold up you sleeves if you dont want to get them stained. First floor is comparatively better with AC and cleaner tables.

What's The Fuss About?

Alright so it's high on sympathy and shock value post 26/11 but it can actually be a nauseating experience for guests. The first and last time i visited this place post the incident, they had a security guard in place who insisted that i had some dangerous metal elements in my bag since his detector kept beeping. so i take out my phone and it still keeps beeping. i then take out my wallet since the coins may be the culprit. Unfortunately, it still keeps beeping and since its impossible to empty all the contents of my bag on the crowded Causeway, i try to explain it to the security fella. But he has the look that makes me feel like m wanting to illegally cross a national border. whatever... really, heard of long-range shooting guns?

A landmark...

Ok, I must admit...It was the 26/11 attack which made me look for this place. Staying in Pune, I had to come down to b'bay for an interview...About the place...impossible to miss on the colaba causeway, it has table with glass tops that have menus below the glass. the atmosphere was really good with a mix of foreigners and Indians. The food...ordered tiger prawns, strawberry shake and a chkn fried rice...shared a 2-seater table with a guy guzzling down cans of carlsberg(im guessing)...total damage...arnd 550 bucks...overall : a lil pricey but i guess a price you have to pay for the place's fame and ambience....The next tym, 10 of us had gone for lunch on my b'day...the bill came up to 5 grand with beer, fried chkn, fried rice, chilli chkn and 3-4 veggie dishes...felt better vfm the second time around...Go to the place if you want to get a glimpse of what happend on 26/11....and for a feel of the bombay we all want to be a part of !!!!

Great Food, Drinks and Music!

I love this place. It has great food, drinks and music. Its not very expensive either. Its a very chilled out place. Should come here more often with a group of friends or should get your tourist friends here. I usually do the above mentioned. I love the great music it too!!! After 26/11 its more crowded. So if your lucky enough you should get a place. Lovely location too. Its one of my favourites in town.

browns neglected

Sadly, one of my fav hang out places has turned into a run of the mill restaurant. The staff is unfriendly,it almost feels like they're obliging customers by waiting on them. The prices too have shot up ridiculously.I can understand a slight increase in prices to keep costs/profits covered, but an unreasonably big jump is so not justified. Not at all pocket friendly as it used to be for the middle class youth, not the same place as it used to be up to 2 years back.I remember this one time when a waiter ignored my signal and rushed to a table full of foreigners.I don't think wanna go to a place that makes me feel inferior in my own country.I hope the place changes for the better or simply puts up a 'tourist only' sign outside.

Stick to the Eat and Go Routine

I would advice ppl to sit in the lower level order their beers and dishes, not expect too much attention from the waiters and be patient with your orders.

Post 26/11 the place has dramatically changed it's approach to customers. Gone, are the days when there used to be these friendly lot of guys serving you some beer. It's all about maximum profits, fast moving rounds of orders on tables and i guess the number of souvenirs sold in a day.

visited this place many times and 2 times after the 26 / 11 attack . The Chinise food is yummy and good quantity refering to the fried rice , The Indian food sucks , the worst butter chicken i ever had , the Tikkas were stale and used the fat portion of chicken in it , they cant customize the order at all , they charge u for peanuts too , the waiters and the staff are rude , the owner sits and talks loudly about the expenses he has personally , waited for 25 mins exactly the get my fried rice , the nan was burnt . and the moment u step up u find pimps and robbers , so mind u r pockets . its just good for the fried rice . GOOD BUY LEOPOLD . REST IN PIECE .

argh!

This joint needs to be torn down! This is what i felt after witnessing the careless attitude, and tall ego's of the staff.

Leopold was synonymous with a good outing for me and my gang, when in south Bombay, but the I guess the recently gained ( not deserved ) popularity gained by this joint, seems to have clearly gone to their head.

The staff is sloppy and behaves rudely , and when taken up with the management u learn that these guys are the real tutors of the attitude the staff has.
I guess leopold is focusing more on fooling new comers than trying to retain its frequent visitors.

My advice 2 the management is not focus on the incoming money, because the way u r going it might be ur last bite of the meat

from good to bad

i am....srry .. i was, a regular at this joint, this change can be attributed to their downhill going service and attitude.
The waiters and management, hav post 26/11 ( their shot at fame), started taking customers for granted.,like you are uninvited guests at their wedding.
On my last three visits i have been made made to switch tables to accomadate more eaters, wave out at waiters like im trapped on a island , to get their attention , and as if all this can overlooked ,the quality of the food, is the cream on the cake, of this super bad experience.
The only plus ,here is that you will get a good helping for every dish u order.
The reason i think crowds pour in at leopold's, is coz they think they think it is very " south bombay" to eat here and the bums at leopold think that its k 2 hav a few pissed of customers, becuase they know that there are herds of fools trying to eat here.
i hope my review creates a dent in their heads or profits( coz they are completely money driven unlike b4) , and makes them pull up their socks( i hope they have em on)
i know there are ppl, who will read my review ,and call it a whole lotta hogwash ,but trust me even i would like believe otherwise about this joint

Disgusted by the attitude!

I was dissappointed at the way we were treated by one of the waiters at our otherwise favourite joint. 2 friends and i went to grab some drinks yesterday. It in the afternoon post the lunch hour.It was very insulting to be asked several times by the waiter about whether we are done with our drinks or not, especially when he could clearly see we havent finished. When we told him about it, he said that there were people waiting in line outside who wanted to get a table.Right next to us were these foreigners who were done at least 20 minutes before us and were just sitting around, but they werent told a word! Funny getting treated like a second class citizen in your own country!I never expected to be treated like this, especially at Leopold!I think the waiters need to learn to cut the fair skin chase because everyone who walks in is a paying customer..NOT just the white trash who walks in giving a huge tip.

It was a much anticipated visit to Leopold Cafe... coz it was my visit after the place had been attacked by the terrorists last year.. when you enter the place - you can even imagine this place could be under attack. The place is buzzing with a lot of activity - firangs and locals moving here n there..good crowd!!

The waiters are extremely friendly - atleast the one taking care of my table was.

Beer pitchers in towers are quite a craze here and extremely popular.. Food here isnt that great and is a bit overpriced... although - food isnt bad either. You can always munch something and leave with a burrp.. :P

The AC section is conjusted - so is the nonAC section.. it gets really hot inside..

I still liked the place.. and shall go again sometime...

Oh - and yes.. those bullet marks of the terrorist attack have not been covered up - they have been preserved - quite nice!

Great food - great atmosphere

I personally loved this place lot, even though several people say it's over hyped and all. There is a good mix of Indian and foreign crowd at this place. The tables really give a feel of the contemparary Irani joints given a slightly neater and more polished look.

Now coming to the food. I loved what I had. Though ihad a dish with which it is difficult to go wrong. It was a fussili al Funghi. The pasta was cooked a perfect al dente. The amount of cheese was just appropriate. The mushrooms were lovely and the consistency just right. Loved the food.

They are quite famous for their Beer pitchers which tower at the centre of most tables at Leopold. Do try this place which is bustling at all times of the day.

Have the right expectations & you'll love it

I don't understand what people expect out of Leopold. Yeah the food is average, the service is mediocre but it never claims to be a gourmet restaurant.

Its a place where you go to have a greasy but really yumm hot dog or some fish and chips with a beer and friends to just relax. thats why it doesnt matter that the food is slow .

and whatever the reviews below have said, leopolds has its own charm and i absolutely love going there... it somehow captures the pulse of that part of the city

so dont expect plush interiors or anything.. you can sit down which is very open and u can see the hustle and bustle of causeway or go up for a more pub-like atmosphere

i would definitely say check this place out. theres a reason its so famous

I first went to Leopold 4 years ago when I had not made Mumbai my home. I was very much impressed by its cosmopolitan culture but now when I visited twice after the terrorist attack I found more Indians there than it had before the attack.
I found it highly overrated, food is average, service is not upto the mark & many of my friends have complained that waiters are biased towards foreigners.
Found nothing special about food but friend Sanket is crazy for Leopold special Pasta.

For a place which is supposedly a landmark of Mumbai, I was disappointed by the service in the upstairs section. Especially since I have eaten below and loved the food, drink and atmosphere.

Nice place to hang out post work

I've been going to Leo's for years now, off and on.

To be frank, haven't tried a lot of the stuff on the menu, but do like the fish chilly, which is a good accompaniment to drinks.

In my personal experience, food here is quite hit-and-miss, sometimes good and sometimes not.

Even then, it's a Bombay institution, and a great place to hang out after work and have a few relaxed drinks in the company of friends.

Disappointing and not worth a trip

Leopold has been renown for foreigners and trendy mumbakins. I feel the hype is more then reality. Having been a food enthusiast and eaten at many great restaurants both in India and aboard I would recommend to pass on going to Leopold unless you happen to be in the area and nothing else seems to be of interesting to your palate.

Regarding our meal, the burger / fries was disappointing and the chinese noodles was drown in oil. We left with two half eaten plates as the food was not appealing. It may have been an off day, but I heard after going there the food has been off it's usual mark for a number of months. Regardless I feel there are stronger food venues in the area for which you would not feel bad for wasting a meal on.

In respect to service, it was good with friendly wait staff that were attentive to our needs. It appeared to be a good watering hole with individual bar taps that can be placed on your table.

As an alternative I would recommend to go to other colaba based restaurants . You may not get the bargain prices as you would find on the leopold menu but you can insure a great meal. Stay tuned for other opinions of fine dining in the mumbai metro area.

Nothing is going to Shut it down

Well even after the Terrorist attack in nov 2008....this cafe was back up as soon as the rest.
Even if you go now you will find the same amount of people inside as well as outside waitin to get in.
Its a really famous place as its become now.....but you'll find all kinds of people out here.
The staff is very friendly and the quantity of the food too is good.
Its best if you want to ahve a quick bite or if you want to celebrate with your friends.
I'm regular upstairs...the music is the only thing that make me go there....hats of to DJ James....you rule Leopold.

National Monument

It should be a part of our incredible India advt.
Went there about a week back and it was full with at-least 30guys waiting.OK now what is so monumental about this.
70%plus crowd was expats(foreigners) .3 months after 26/11 and all of them are having a blast. This made me feel good about being a Indian and laugh about all those smart guys on news raising the stink after every such incident.

We love u Leopold keep it up.

Now about the food try the chicken Lollipop the sauce with it heavenly.
The chicken in black bean sauce also works up ur appetite and they some interesting brew's in their beer stock try each .....

An ideal after-a-very-taxing-day hangout place!

An all time favorite, Leos is a place that fits every mood. Be it for a beer on a hot afternoon, the downstairs area is perfect for chilling with a mug (or the tower, whichever you prefer), or a complete party mood, where the upstairs in the evening has brilliant tracks to suit the mood. And the best part is, after a while, the ambiance just takes you in, so the music does not even matter. The only downside, and its big, is that it gets unbearably crowded on weekends. So much so that breathing space becomes a privilege. Definitely not a place for the claustrophobic. All in all, a favourite, mostly because of its excellent placement, and atmosphere. A great place to go after work on weekdays...will ensure enough beer and place. :)

Overpriced

Leopold's is a nice place to hang out and all that, I don't need to mention that since it has already been mentioned in the endless reviews but what I would like to tell you guys that these guys are overpriced. If not for Leo's would you pay 140 for a pint of beer without Air conditioning, with close tables where you would touch the other guys food and rub your back with the guy behind you. Service was slow being Saturday night but that can be excused and damage done was 1554/- for 3 of us which included beer and 3 starters. Nice place but too pricey and one more thing beer wasn't chilled at ALL..........

Its is a great place to chill but a bit overated. You get a mix of all kinds of people and is always full. The upstairs AC section is a bit dingy though.

The food is so-so. Try the paneer makhani though. Delicious. And of course the tub of beer which is accompanied by unlimited peanuts and cheeselings.

A good place to go with friends.

The famous Leopold cafe (now perhaps more famous after the 26/11 attacks) is a landmark in its own right. The place needs no introduction and perhaps no review either.....I am writing this coz I feel like voicing my appreciation.

Simple ambience, good crowd, prompt service (you can be an office goer on the move looking for a quick snack or a bunch of friends ust whiling away time), amazing food, huge portions and priced just right......

There are 2 levels; the upper one is air conditioned and there is slightly loud music if you like it.....the lower one is an open cafe buzzing with life....

If you are a beer person, they serve it in this big tower with a tap at the bottom...quite a fancy item!

I have been there for lunch as wel as dinner and have ordered the same things alll the time....The Pot rice was very butterryyyy :-) ...the crispy chicken is lip smacking and I didn't need to order anything after that. I washed it down with iced tea and caramel pudding for dessert (which again is just right)...

I love this place...

Poor.

A change in management (same family, different individual) has caused a landslide in the quality of food served at this establishment. My old favorites like beef chilly and steamed rice are all pre made and unpalatable. Its almost like the restaurant has become complacent in its old age and is just working for profitability. I don't know how they will keep this atrocity running, but for health & hygiene's sake - not for long I hope.

Recommendation(s)-

Highly Overrated

Too much hoopla and lots of sympathy by the media is what seems 2 temporarily hide leopolds true discriminating avatar.
This place is very poor on food, service, ambience and attitude. I dont trust immature reviews by Lonely Planet anyways and wasnt surprised to see them mention this old hippie adda (so typical of the whities).
Only wannabes who want to feel "international" or wana claim an association with this place "after the terror attacks" should visit this place.. for the rest of us.. Bombay has some real gems to explore rather than waste precious time, money and self respect here.

Jumping the Gun.

In response to Pearl Jan,
I'm sorry if leopold made you feel as if you were unwelcome based on your nationality. But I think you're a bit extreme to call them racists. On a dry day it is true that Indian nationals are not allowed to drink, however foreign nationals may consume alcoholic beverages provided they show their passports. I believe if any offence was taken by leopolds actions it is the fault of the government and not of them. Leopold denied access solely to avoid any political harrassment, and has every right to serve foreign nationals liquor as it is a business after all. I am sure if you go any day other than a dry day you will not be refused admission.

Racists!

I've been visiting Leopold's Café and Leo's Square (The tiny pub on the mezzanine level) since around 12 years.. But recently, I was there on 30th January. It was a dry day commemorating Gandhiji's death anniversary. When I arrived there the manager immediately recognized me and started a conversation (general stuff on why I chose to come on a dry day, etc...)
Later I said I didn't mind it being a dry day and that I'd at least like to groove to some nice music since I'd come so far and started to head towards the staircase. He stopped me and said, "I'm sorry only foreigners with a valid passport are allowed upstairs." I asked, "since when??" He said, "I'm sorry it's not our rule but the excise department. And unless you have a foreign passport, I can't send you upstairs."
I was shocked for being treated like that in my own country while I watched a couple of Kiwis breeze upstairs. It was the most humiliating and troubling experience of my life. I am certain there is no such rule by the excise department!
I swore to start an Anti-Leo's club since then. I am prepared to forget the glory years of endless hours at my favourite college hangout and would really want people to take this matter up seriously. I mean, we talked about the British being racists before independence. What is this???

WHY? oh WHY?

I had such wonderful delightful memories of Leopolds!
But my trip last sunday was a trip to hell and back. It was a mistake to sit upstairs which resembled a dingy dirty bar! With uncomfortable seats and sooo dirty!
A trip to the loo was horrific as a came face to face with a huge cockroach!
An hours wait for a burnt chicken kathi roll was so not worth it!
We love leopolds; I've been frequenting the place since college! Please maintain our beloved cafe leopold!

A Tribute to Leopold Cafe

We've all been gripped by the events that have been and continue to unfold in Mumbai the past day and a half. They are nothing short of apalling and tragic. One of the very first targets that was attacked in Mumbai was classic hangout Leopold Cafe on Colaba Causeway, better known to cheery frequenters as Leo's.

While we've all seen the horrendous pictures of the blood-stained floors and empty sneakers of lucky escapees, I would like to take this time to remember Leo's for what it has always been: an unpretentious, friendly neighborhood pub, with both Mumbai natives and foreigners alike, enjoying cold beers, delicious snacks, and great company.

I remember the very first time I ever went to Leo's. Before I took off to culinary school in Napa, California, my friends took me out for a going-away party. And where else, but Leo's. I remember seeing people of all creeds, colors, and cultures, with one thing in common: they were all having fun. There was no uneasiness, no difference between the way people were being treated, just happiness and relaxation in its purest form. We guzzled cold Kingfishers, snacked on delicious Chilly Chicken, and joked about our days in college. We felt comfortable approaching a table of foreigners and joking with them about something or another, sharing laughs with people we otherwise would never have met or spoken to.

Since that day, Leo's became a favourite for my friends and I, especially if we were in the South Bombay area. While the Causeway gives one a host of choices, Leo's was our place. Its energy, its positive vibes, and its people will never be forgotten. My heart goes out to everyone that was at Leo's that unfateful night, to those who lost their lives, to those who anguished in those few seconds while their lives were being shattered, to the ownership of Leo's, for managing such a great establishment for so many years, only to have it crumble in a blink of an eye. The assailants may have drawn blood, but they cannot steal the soul of Leopold Cafe, which will continue to endure.

love it during the afternoons more

A lovely place to chill out watching the hustle bustle during the afternoons. Ideal time being 3.30 to 6 then pick up the wife, sister from their shopping blitz & head home, snoozing away in the car.

The best way to get excellent service here is give a tip before the first order. Will ensure good-great service in spite of firangs.

The other best way is to wear customized bermudas, gogs, be fair enough to pass for a breed & speak in an accent.

The 3rd way is take a firang at all.

If none of the above works for you, Do Not go.

Good Place - Bad Service.

This is one those age old places where people from various places sit together, with the % of foreigners weighing a bit more then the indians. So, its obivous that you will get a less attention when it comes orders, etc. When you finish your beer you expect to be asked by the waiters for a repeat, but here no one really bothers. I know they get good tips from the firangs but, that does'nt mean you behave in such a way with anyone else. Apart from this factor I really would not think twice about going to this place as the food & drinks are good & affordable.

Hmm Beef...

I miss beef in Mumbai cuz you just don't get it in enough places... That way I miss red meat in general, cuz the kind of places that you get it, either its too greasy, or too expensive. This place fits right in the middle of those two problems... Unfortunately for me its so far from home, I rarely get to go there...

Try the Chinese its quantities and Mumbai taste wont disappoint, as long as you like Indianized Chinese (which I do). Oh and don't you dare forget the BEER, guzzle it with everything you eat, it sure does make it a lovely experience...

Old world

Sitting on one of their tables sipping a beer or an ice tea watching the world go by, you wonder why you havent thought of coming to Leo's earlier?!?!?! After some serious shopping on Colaba Causeway, i decided to make my way to Leo's. Budding poets and foreigners who pool in all their cash for a pint find this place extremely economical and VFM. Their beef chilly and fried rice is an absolute deathly combo and a must have. the indian fare is superior to the chinese although the yummy chicken tikka masala, once an affordable Rs. 200 has now been steeply priced, what with the management having recently jacked up their rates by Rs. 150. approx.
Quick and decent service with an old world charm is what one looks forward to on a dreamy afternoon!

Boisterous, energetic pub

Frequented by a large population of ex-pats and/or Colaba hippies, this boisterous, loud, yet pleasant pub on the Causeway is a fun place to hang with friends when you're in the mood to have loud discussions and laughs. A novelty item here is their beer tower, a cylindrical pipe-shaped object that stands about 3 feet tall on your table, filled halfway with beer. Drinkers can then fill in their pints at their leisure.

This place also has some amazing bar food. Try the chilli chicken (also called Crispy Chicken), Reshmi Kebab, Butter Garlic Prawns, and Vege Spring Rolls - all were amazing and we scarfed 'em down in record time.

Remember, this place just has that loud type of vibe, so if you're not into that, you will not enjoy this place. Another point to note is the upstairs, more smoker-friendly section. I personally think it's a little too small, smokey and grungy. Downstairs rocks.

Leopold's Cafe - Charming..

Ah Leopold's , first went there when i was in the 8th grade! I still love the watermelon juice and the chicken chilli dry they serve. The buzz & constant chatter keep the place thriving ... old posters and frames give it the ancient , been there done that look ;) ,pitchers of beer and cheeselings go hand . If you like dessert try their caramel custard and chocolate mousse.

You'll find a tourist , a loner, a couple , the middle aged man who loves his beer ,an over enthusiastic college crowd, gregory roberts .. just about everyone comes to leo's. It's even better now that they have strated delivering ... It;s not just food & drinhks that one can buy at Leo's , you can also buy souvenirs like leopold's branded mugs, tees , quarter plates etc and all of this very tastefully designed...

Planning to take that walk down Colaba Causeway ? Make sure you hop into Leo's for a quick sip !

Mumbai action

Leopold is a bar- café tucked in the heart of the Colaba causeway, and had became a place of great interest to me after reading Shantaram which made me look at Mumbai with a totally different angle. I was very keen on visiting the café and observing the activities that I had easily ignored on my previous trips

Flashback
I still remember the first time I visited Leopold café. I was in college, and had heard a lot about this place from our seniors in Rotaract. Infact, going to Leopold was more like an event I was looking forward too. The visit that time was interesting, although I don’t think I had really observed the people around, the kick was just about visiting the place and telling the world you had been there. Couple of years later when my office was in town we often visited Leopold but always headed to the bar upstairs.

May 2006

As I walked to Leopold through Colaba Causeway I looked at the animated hoarding with bold lettering and pictures shouting out Leopold since 1837. This was new signage which has replaced the old simple Leopold sign recently.
As we walked in through the door, a firang guy, who was probably German seated at the table near the open door, greeted us, welcoming us inside. After sometime we realized he was trying to make conversation with the other men s
seated on the table behind us. Suddenly he was standing between our table and the table behind and announced that he sang very well and would do a special performance for us. I was extremely excited and hoped to see some action, but unfortunately the guy simply sat on the table with those men and disappeared after a few minutes.

I saw this young guy probably in his 20s with a plastic bag, standing outside, looking inside than talking on his cell phone, minutes later he caught a table next to us and after sometime ventured outside exchanged bags with a middle-aged man and returned back enjoying his beer, leaving my mind to wander what the deal could have been. Amidst the chaos there was a group of American and Korean tourists who were competing with each other on doing a beer bottoms up. When I went for a visit to the washroom, I saw this firang women chatting with a Indian guy near the washbasin. The guy probably in his mid 30`s looked like some kind of agent, again this could just be a figment of my imagination. He chatted with the women enquiring about her health, and telling her she looked much better, maybe the new drug the doctor suggested her must have helped her.
Leopold has a total different culture even within its two sections. The non- ac section is full of tourists, very few Indians. The interiors gives it the 80`s look. The big old clock, the paintings of rockstars, musicians probably of 70`s or 80`s, the sign of the parsi logo( don’t know whats it supposed to be called) on the windows above and casual irani chairs and tables. Hemi pointed out the good thing about having the menu sandwiched on the glass table, thus not bothering to wait for the waiter to bring the menu to order. Also downstairs you have to pay first to get your alcohol. I wonder how this place would have been in 18 71 don’t think my grandfather ever visited it.

Upstairs is more like a lounge bar, there is music, you will find very few foreigners upstairs.

All in all, I think I like Leopold, an interesting place to hangout, maybe I should go their often.
