Not so good experience

After reading a lot of rave reviews about this restaurant, I did get to visit this place last weekend and believe me, the experience was pretty disappointing.

Been there for dinner last Sunday evening and the restaurant was almost empty when we came in. Ordered for a shorba and a chicken tikka starter, the shorba was pretty good but the Chicken was rubbery, cold & not fully done. My daughter had a tough time chewing on the chicken and honestly, I should have heeded to my wife’s advice then & gone elsewhere to have the main course. But, I assured her that the main course would be good & asked for Butter chicken & mixed veg kadai along with a few plain rotis & naan.

Veg kadai was the only thing that was palatable; rotis were cold & over burnt while the chicken was a re-run of the starter, rubbery & cold!!

The only thing that I found good about this place is the décor & the service which was impeccable.

My sincere advise, avoid this place if you can as the overly priced food is not worth your money!!

uneven food quality, nice atmosphere

The first time I went to Umerkot about a year ago, I was bowled over. Every dish we ordered was impeccable.. the kebabs, the dum aloo, the lotus seeds, the biryani. All 4 of us that went were very impressed with the quality of the dishes, the attentiveness of the service, the ambiance, etc.

My husband and I went back a couple month later and sat and scratched our heads. Nothing seemed the same. The food was passable but not delicious, even though we ordered a few of the same dishes. The kebabs were dry and not very flavorful. And the service was slow.

A few weeks later I went with a group of girlfriends, and we had mixed reviews. Some of the dishes were great! The kebabs were back to being juicy, but one of the veg entrees came to use stone cold and had to be sent back to the kitchen.

And just for the record... I totally disagree with what the previous poster has said. Food education or not, people know what is delicious to them. If it doesn't taste good, who cares if it follows tradition?

Hi Smallsquirrel,

Read your review and have had Chef Tyagi revisit all the recipes again. We have conducted a fresh menu tasting and now I assure you that you will have a nice time on your next visit. However, we have spiced up the food a bit, due to popular demand, thus you can order otherwise by requesting the wait staff.

Decent place.. no issues!

So it was a lazy afternoon...me n wifey went thru reviews on burrp n zeroed in on umer kot. Was a gamble... but paid off...Go for the buffet... 350 person. Value for money. Starters were basic.. aloo tikki, sprouts, green salad, grilled gobi...soup. Then comes the roti platter with the sabzi and gravy and dal... then the pulao/biryani. All were good.. The desserts blew mw away. Phirni, rosogulla, angoori gulab jamun (to die for) , ice cream. .. Will recommend it to friends.

Decent food... Bad music spils the ambiance...

Went to this place on Valentine's day. I guess they had made special arrangements and there was a couple only area when candle lights etc. We liked the starters. Main course was very average. We were surprised by complementary desert - a chocolate filled Gujiya and Ice cream which was nice. Service was slow... I mean really slow...

Though the overall experience was ok, but was really disappointed by choice of music. Imagine listening to Zilla Ghaziabad song on Valentine's day, that too "Apne baap ka na samjho maal". Even after asking them to change the music, these guys kept on playing the same. That was something that made me shift my rating from a 4 to 3.

Murg Ki Chaap

Kebabs at Umerkot are too good. Staying at Raheja, this is our favourite haunt. We order the kebabs home for munching during the T20 matches.

The good thing is that the food has always been consistent and Chef Sanjay Tyagi is the best.

A Brief Lull And Back Zooming

Loved the food at Umerkot. Found their kebabs to be excellent and so was the Nalli gosht. Later a few of my visits saw mediocre food and I was disappointed.

My last visit, a few days back, brought me memories of that excellent food. The food is good again.

I hear that the restaurant is starting a face-lift of their interior next month.

I regularly take my office team and customers to Umerkot. The kebabs are very unique and the staff there personalise the menu as per our requirement.

The murg chaap, lamb sheek and dal makhani is excellent. Overall a great place for very good quality dining.

Ho Hum

After hearing legends about this place, the buffet let me down a little. To start off with, they served UB export beer as a complement to the buffet menu. It tasted like bitter water. Period. Beer lover disappointed.
Next came the food. The tandoori chicken was overdone and the mutton had lost its zing. The salads all tasted the same and the desserts were below average.
The plus was the main course. Delicious rumalis and very promising curries with nice consistency and even better taste. The mutton was very good. Moderately priced place which is a big advantage. An average restaurant overall...

umerkot bad exp

went to umerkot with friends from college around 20 of us on friday night 7th May. Had called few days before making sure sitting arrangements were there. But unfortunately didnt get the place I was told about. The food wasnt up to the standard. The waiters were trying to push Aloo tikki multiple times and after repeated requests got us chicken starters. Also they even didnt know we had a chicken dish in main course. I had to talk to the manager again to remind them. The biggest thing was they never served us the soup!! Overall its overhyped and overpriced!

Reminded me of Authentic North Indian Restro

Hi I have been here for more than eight times. The place ambiance is good. The music goes back to Mughal period with instrumental touch. They serve complimentary starters.
You must try Karari Bhindi here. It is really worth . Also the lassi is ok.
And in main course paneer items are really tasty.
Service is good. You don't have to wait longer for your order.
A really cool place to hang out with your friends/family with soft music and tasty and yummy North Indian cuisine.

Not the very best..

I was looking for a Indian fine dining place to invite few friends for dinner yesterday. I choose Umerkot as it was among the top 5 rated restaurants in Bangalore.
I do not remember the exact name of the dishes but for the starters we ordered golden fried prawns and a chicken soup along with allo chat, a preparation of baby corn from the veg section. A complimentary namkeen with a dip was a good gesture. Presentation was top notch, and chicken soup was really good, but I was a little disappoined byt the fact that prawns were a bit smelly.
For the main course we ordered dal makhani, paneer pasanda, another vegetable preparation(I dont remember the name) and a chicken biryani. Dal makhni was not the best I had in bangalore. Biryani was very average and may be bit towards the bad side as the rice was sticky and even the taste was not up to the mark. For rest of the things the taste was on the sweeter side. Prices are very nominal, just paid 2300 for 6 people including tips. Even though the service was really good, I must say that I was disappointed by the overall food as my expectation were really high.

Service can be better

Been there on weekday for lunch along with a bunch of co-workers and decided to go with the Jasmine lunch option. Not sure if Ala carte was available for lunch on weekdays.

Since we didn't have a booking we had to wait for 20-25 mins to get a table which was ok.

Soup and Main course was on table and the starters and desserts was self service.

Liked the starters very much. Simple yet tasty. Liked the chicken salad very much. Tomato soup was just ok.

Complimentary drink was never served until we asked for the drinks. Not sure about the sequencing of the items on the table.

Main course was good with very tasty paneer and chicken. Alo subji was ok and the vegetable of the day was never served which we only released later also the rotis were not coming very fast.

Desserts were good especially the small jamuns and the rum cake / pastry.

Overall a good value for money. I felt the service could have been better. May be it was buffet lunch so the service was dull. Felt the staff were little disconnected.

Good food

This one is not a HUGE restaurant, however it has enough moving space. It also looks spacious because of the way the tables are arranged. The papads were awesome. I was just about to be filled with it when our main course arrived. We had ordered daal makhani and rotis. The daal was just awesome. Did not try out the drinks there but would love to one day. The place has a very courteous staff who does not treat you differently if you have an oriental face. Another thing, this is for the family, so take yours out and enjoy the good food.

Quite Good...

I had their Lunch Set menu on a weekday - I was famished and i certainly stuffed my self that day!
We started with welcome drink - u can have either a beer or soft drink. i chose the latter. next came the soup - it was good but never paid much attention because of what came next - The starters - which were simply fantastic. The tikki, the paneer, - done to perfection i must say. The main course Rice i.e the biryani was good...but i must say i have had better . the Roti/Naan were fine. the subzi/gravies for it were good. Some didnt quite hit the spot but thats a matter of taste i guess. the overall experience is good... Worth a visit! (i would give 3.5... but that aint an option here)

Just ok

Umerkot is a just ok restaurant. The veg dishes I had was better than the Mutton Rara I ordered which had too much salt in it and the mutton chunks were hard. The fish starter was good and so was the paneer. The ambience is nothing to talk about; a little dark in there. Overall nothing to rave about if you talk about value for money.

Visited Umerkot yesterday with a few European clients. I am going to Umerkot after almost 6 months. The ambiance is still the same, sober.
The food is absolutely fantastic, not very spicy, thus my guests loved the food. The service is very efficient. There is a gentleman-Khan, who served us. He was excellent.
By far, all my visits to Umerkot have been wonderful and I think it is a great place to entertain foreigners who detest very spicy food.

Yummy !!

Went to this place today. Started with tamatar shorba which was good (better than most places), masala papad (good), murgh abeer (juicy) and tandoori baby corm (tasty). Main course of Achari Aloo Anarkali (yum) with Ulta tawa paratha (very yum) and Khurmi Naan (yum again).

We were disappointed with the dum biryani though which was just average. The Angoori Rabadi was very tasty but the rabadi quantity could have been more and a bit thicker.

But definitely a place we would visit again !!

Good Service and Good Food

A month late review though a needed one.

We 6 friends planned to visit this place as i had a good exp some time back. Ambience was good and service was excellent too.
Fish in the buffet was tasty and wish to visit again for the same.

One suggestion,
Waiters need to be more responsive and caring. They look uninterested to fill even water. We had to call him 3-4 times every now and then.

Otherwise its good.

very bad experience

served very cold soup and also many of the dishes were cold and doesn't seem like freshly prepared. Rotis were soggy.

The worst part of all is they served stale desserts. Pastries and some of the sweets were horrible. the bad part is that they are doing it knowingly and admit only if we complain.

Horrible service when we went with a 11 member team, no attention at all... we had to litterally wait for each dish few mins before someone can pay some attention to us, dont think this is all due to the restaurant is crowded but it is due to their lack of attention to the customers.

Good but not great

Reading rave reviews about this place, decided to check it out with my family on a Saturday afternoon. Expectations were sky high as we entered a small but well arranged restaurant with inviting staff. We started off with murgh kebabs. The chicken were very tender and fresh and juicy. The masala paste sticking to the roasted chicken were spicy and very royal. For the tag price, the quantity should have been a little more. Check out the Mugh Chaanp, if I were to pick the best of the lot. Being a Biryani aficionado that I am, the next meals included a mutton biryani and chicken biryani. Now, what a disappointment after having the succulent kebabs. Being a Biryani lover and having Biryani of all kinds from all across the world, I can easily tell this not what a Mughlai Biryani should feel and taste like. The rice was overcooked, sticking and partly mixed here and there with the masala pastes. The original Dum Biryani, by definition is cooking meat and rice together over wooden slow flame. Each and every rice grain will be long, slender and be filled up with flavor of the meat and kewra (a kind of scent applied in Mughal Biryani). This kind of Biryani tastes heavenly even if you don't choose to have the meat. But the one served at Umerkot tasted more like South Indian Biryani (with greatest regards to lovers of this kind of Biryani) where it seems that the rice and meat were cooked separately and mixed at the end with a spatula. Big big let down, Umerkot for North India Mughlai Biryani lovers. The curries were okay, the Biryanis already having spoiled the gastronomical journey. Finally, the desserts seems to earned some points back with the really good Angoori Rabri. Overall, I would still recommend Umerkot, but true Muglai cuisine lovers (especially genuine Biryani hoggers) can get a much real taste at smaller and less expensive eateries like Lazeez. (near Jyothi Niwas College).

Good Experience, Good food

Umerkot to me is one of those top fine dine restaurants in Bangalore. I had been thrice with the latest being on 19th November. The ambience had been same all these years and very soothing too. Good number of dishes, although we did not try all of them, whatver we tried were good. The Biriyani and the kebabs were simply good. Best is their fish kebabs, small cubes of marinated seer fish grilled. They do not have a good line-up of soft drinks, except lassi, jaal jeera and narial paani. They do serve alcohol, but that's expensive and they do not have a menu card for htat and that's fishy, since they keep on insisting that they have license and the bill would not be in the name of Umerkot. Hard drinks also is limited. Service is ok, not great not poor. Had to call them once or twice.

Overall excellent food, just what you would expect in a fine dine restaurant, bad line up of drinks, ok service and good ambience. Expensive.

Very good selection of non veg and veg items
decent service
hot food comes fast to u

Cons

The visibility is not clear of the resturant

The cutlery for the presentaton of the food is below average for the price we pay

The food is over priced by at least 30% i have eaten fantastic food at Masala Club with excellent ambiance and presentation for nearly the same price

They do not have botteled Bangalore KF beer!!

deserts are very average

not good for corporate business lunches

Akbar's Food

As the name suggests Umerkot is Akbar's birthplace. So you can savor all traditional mughlai recipes here. The Afgani kabab is awesome, and also some mutton preparations. They can come up with a candlelit dinner if you request. But not exactly a proper wine and dine experience as alcohol here is a bit over-priced, and they also dont have a menu. If you are goin out with family, its a nice place. And a must visit if you are a foodie!!

Awesome Place for a special time !!

We had gone there after a tiresome day with my frnd. The dine light n cool atmosphere n the candle just rejuvenated us .. we were just looking forward what else this place could offer, we ordered for Chicken Afghani Kebaba for starters. though we had to wait for sometime but i guess it was worth every bit of it !! The chicken was so tender n juicy & pudina chutney with that was like soona pe suhaga:-) it was super finger licking one!! then we ordered for Gost biryani.. it was super too.. the mutton was so soft .. this would one of the only place where the biryani was outstanding.. we had an awesome experience.. the total bill came only 800 rs which is absolutely fine :-).. So in total this is place u want to go for a special night ...

loved the starters

for me the USP of this place is starter of this place.. if i remember it right its "Murg ki Chaap" - tender juicy flavored (not very spicy) tandoori chicken that just melt in your mouth !!
It is good but i think it's a little over priced. So, if you are looking for once in a few months experience this can be the place

Only About Okay

I went to this place after reading the reviews over here but was slightly dissapointed. I went here on Sunday the 27th (I am mentioning this so that the management can check if this was not a very good day for them).

I wouldn't say the food was bad but it just wasn't as great as the reviews here. My favorite dish for which I usually go for buffet's is the Biryani, it was tasty but I did not feel it was fresh. Fresh Biryani should be steaming hot and what was served was utmost only warm. The rice grains were broken like it is after re-tossing and re-heating.

In the deserts the Black forest cake had a hard bottom like it was overcooked or recooked.

Somehow I maybe expected too much out of this place. Since some of the things like the tandoori chicken and the Gulab Jamoons were really good I rate the overall experience as average.

The other thing I notice in their meal type is that they say Beer is inclusive in the Rs 299 plus taxes and I was offered only one soft drink.

Hi Sajit,

The beer being inclusive is stated in the overview of your restuarant. You Should change that.

I do not think you should use terms like local bakeries because I do not eat in local bakeries. Even places like Sweet Chariot, Nilgiries, Cake and Bake etc continue to follow your so called old fashioned style and they definitely are not local. Defend your style do not offend other styles and tastes.

Good but could be better

Just came back from Buffet Lunch from Umerkot. Instead of watching India vs Ireland match, I am still thinking of Gherkin Masala that was served(!!) in the buffet. If anyone is wondering, Gherkin Masala was what we know as Tondali Masala and definitely not Gherkin. After reading Mr. Chako's nasty replies to the reviews, I thought I will confirm that Gherkin and Tondali are not related. So here it is ... read on. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gherkin and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coccinia_grandis. Somehow Gherkins are related to Tondali in Umerkot.

Now to the starters, Tandoori Murg was excellent. Leg pieces were very nice but my wife said the breast piece was little dry. Fish Tikka was not good. Fish was a little stinky, may be its the variety of the fish but was not to my liking. Paneer, Rajma tikki were good as was the salad options. Chicken Chat salad mix did not work well.

Then the main course which was served on the table. I thought it is served so to keep nice food temperature. Food arrived lukewarm and with the fan blowing behind, it got cold quickly. We had Murg methi malai, Gherkin Masala, Paneer Jalfrezi, Murg Biryani, Roti and Nan. Murg Methi Malai was great, highlight of the lunch. Well balanced flavors and subtle hint of Methi. Paneer Jalfrezi was good... standard affair. Gherkin Masala was disappointing in a Rs 299 buffet lunch. Nan was perfect but the rotis had burnt edges. Murg Biryani was full of flavor, balanced spices and equally flavorful chicken. However, I could make out that the biryani rice was burnt a little bit. I had few burnt rice grains stuck together in the biryani. Rice grain was broken but thats not acceptable in a fine dining restaurant.

Desserts were excellent. Angoori Gulabjamun (grape sized hence the name), were excellent as was the Phirani. Did not try the pastries but fruits were fresh and sweet. Icecream was a good accompaniment.

Overall, good place not a run of the mill restaurant but not fine dining. They need to improve and pay attention to details to get close to a Michelin star. Few let downs. May be because it was Lunch Service on a Sunday. My wife is returning with her mother and grandmother on womens day for lunch.

Yes! My all means, yes!!!

If you have just logged onto Burrp and are trying to decide where to eat out on a Saturday, then think no further. If you enjoy good food, especially North-Indian food, head over to Umerkot.

I'm not going to droll on about the ambiance, location or parking(all of which are quite decent), but the food, people! The food is excellent!

I still remember the smell and taste of their Gilafi Kulchas sprinkled lavishly with saffron. And their Gosht preparations, the meat dying to slip off the bone. Come here with an appetite and I'm sure you're not going back disappointed!

There's a really good menu to select from, but highly recommended for non-veg freaks! The place is pretty expensive though and if you're searching for satisfaction, it's gonna cost you. Dinner for two cost me around Rs.1500, with a beer each. But I think the quality of food is worth it.

I'm dying to go back there!

Did not live up to its rating

Visited this place about a month back with a group of six friends. It is one of the top rated restaurants on burrp hence the expectations very reasonably high.
Our orders roughly were
1) golden fried praws(dont really remember the exact name)
2)Some baby corn starters
3)Panner tikka
4)Chicken Biriyani
Found the Praws to be lil smelly and soggy and the biriyani was on the sweeter side.
Nothing was great about any of the other items ordered there.
That pretty much sums up the experience. The service is good and the place is nice in terms of decor.

Wonderful Dinner

I decided to post my review after the wonderful dinner that we had at Umerkot. I have been to Umerkot several times with my family, however for the first time I took my expat office colleagues for a dinner. I had booked a table for 8 at 7.30 today. The booking was confirmed and the table was ready when we entered. The restaurant did not look too busy.
We ordered some wine and called for some recommendation for kebabs. Chef Sanjay assisted us with some really wonderful kebabs of prawns mutton and chicken. They were top notch. The food was not too spicy but were really cooked well. We went on to order some curry and breads. and kulfi for dessert. Over all a wonderful personalized experience that made me content for choosing Umerkot for the dinner.

Decent food at a decent price

Went here with a group of friends and opted for a buffet. Starters were okayish, one of the starters karari gobhi was harder than actual gobhi starters are. Even though it was a buffet and we self serviced with the starters, the main course was served on our table. The main course was decent. Infact I felt it was home like home food. Chicken, Mutton, mix veg, paneer, dal and rotis. And now comes the best part, the deserts, they were quite good. Chocolate rum-ball was awesome and pastry was delightful too. Decent lunch at decent price, not a bad deal.

Food 7/10
Ambiance 7/10
Service 6/10
Cost 7/10

Overall 7/10

not a great place

I have been to this place for our anniversary dinner. I was surprised to see the ambience of the place. For a place that boasts itself to be exceptional and the reviews being 4 stars the ambience was bare minimum. The place looked like it was setup in a house. Service was not too great. Food was different but not worth the price. Also, the quantity they serve is as if it is a sampler.

I would not recommend this place to people who enjoy food rather than the price on menu card.

Fake Mughlai Restaurant!

It has become fashionable to lift a little known detail about an emperor or a celebrity of the past and expatiate on the menu card the association of the place with the person and run the restaurant on such reflected glory. UMERKOT is one of those restaurants.
I visited this restaurant on the fifth of August 2012 for Lunch. Ordered for a Mutton Biryani, Tawa Fish fry, a glass of buttermilk, Nan and vegetable jalfraezi.
The fish fry was excellent and is worth a try. They serve 4 pieces of a fish fillet, which goes down well as a starter. The quality of the seer fish (king fish) was excellent.
The Mutton biryani was a disaster, they served biriyani which was brought from the left overs of what Humayun ate after the birth of Akbar at Umerkot. The rice was dry and the mutton, which ought to be succulent, had the texture of dry fish!
As regards the buttermilk, it was so sour that i had to get it changed and the waiter was kind enough to get the same buttermilk diluted with water and bring the diluted beverage with all the solemnity of a priest bringing the wine to the altar in a church.
Jalfraezi was without salt, but with addition of salt, it tasted better.
On the whole, if a restaurant calling itself a MUGHLAI, does not serve decent biryani, it is definitely not worth its salt.
I strongly recommend that, you recommend this restaurant to persons against whom you nurse a grudge!!

Culinary Delight

After many friends recommending me this place and a lot of persuation from my wife, I decided to venture out to Umerkot. I am not a very big fan of dining at Indian restaurants, because I really cannot take the spice.

Well, Umerkot it was!!

I liked the location of the place, not a crowded road. parking was easy with the help of the valet. The wine shop on location was a smart idea. The welcome was pleasant. The restaurant was kind of crowded for a wednesday. The restaurant inside looked very elegant and to good taste. The servers were pleasant. The menu looked inviting and not the average trash. I decided to stick to some kebabs and biryani, my wife chose some curry and bread.

My verdict:

Ambience: Good
Staff: Very Good
Attitude: Very Good
Atmosphere: Very Good
Food: Excellent ( I admit to have had the best kebabs here)
Service: Good

The only negative that I thought that they could improve on, was the communication skills of the servers. A bit of explanation could have made our review of the menu a bit easier.

Now that I have seen this place, I certainly think, its a good bet for people like me who do not indulge in fiery spice Indian fare.

I shall be back, definitely.

My kind of place

I recently moved to Bangalore from Pune. Settling down yet. I was recommended Burrp by a lot of friends for getting genuine feedback on restaurants across cities. Well thus logged in.

Reading the reviews, I went to Umerkot, last thu. Myself and a few business collegues and a client.

The place is tucked in a not so crowded part of Koramangala, on the 80ft road. It is on the grounf floor of an old white building. The approach is neat. The valet was kind and polite. They have a wine retail at the entrace, which I thought was a beautiful idea for someone who wants to buy a bottle on his way out. I was greeted by a pleasant young man and shown my table, since I had booked that morning.
The ambience is neat, refined and soothing, not very Indian- for the cuisine, but tasteful though. The lighting is perfect and the white table cloth and glassware gave a sophesticated feel.
The drink menu was good, we ordered a bottle of Australian wine for all of us.
We found the kebabs section very impressive, thus decided to order a broccoli, a sheekh and a bhatti chicken from the tandoor ( forgive my description, as i do not remember the names). The kebabs were purely sinful, great portions and amazing taste... I have not had them so good, even in Pune.
We were recommended Nalli Gosht and Murg with Coriander for main course along with dal Makhani and Mushroom for one of my collegue. We also ordered Ulte Tawa Paratha and gilafi Kulcha ( these were all recommendations). I think we over ordered. The food was great, but we were too full by the end of it.
Summary: Great Place for anyone who has a taste like mine. :)
PS. I think this place is a good bet to show off Indian food to clients too. Atleast my clients were impressed.
Service is pleasant and accomodative.

Insect - Dish!

The overall terrible experience started with the drink. An absolute hopeless coconut water with pepper (Named: Nariyal Pani ka shikanji) felt like some spoilt packaged coconut water.
Then came the code worded Aloo tikki and boiled baby corn. The dishes were code-worded so that no one could understand whats going to be brought. The dishes are far too simple and tasteless.

Worst was the punjabi aloo. It was full of insects. When pointed to the cook, he said they are seeds!!! Well I bought a few samples of that home to check in the bright light and my doubts were confirmed. The whole dish had umpteen number of these insects. It almost felt they were added for taste as so many insects cannot make it into one serving!!!

Absolutely terrible experience. PLEASE AVOID.

Very fine food

I have been to Umerkot since the time it opened. The food has been consistently good except for once that I had a problem around 5-6 months back. I visited again yesterday with some clients. The food is as good now, maybe a bad moment for me then. We tried a few kebabs in prawn, lamb and chicken and paneer for myself, a vegetarian.
The kebabs were much appreciated and the paneer was very soft and subtly.
The prawns were fresh as per comments and well made.

You should be coming here a day before!

At home, I like mutton dishes cooked may be a few hours back, and kept in refrigerator or otherwise. Spices do seem to seep in. But that is at home and for a few hours. Seems Umerkot got an inspiration from such an experience, and prefer serving food, that is a day old at least. Meat is not fresh. Guaranteed. I remember they saying once that food is from Akbari gharaana. Couldnt stop laughing for half an hour on this joke. Normal routine, run of the mill food, that is priced exorbitantly. Seems its a trend to do a kitsch copy of Mughlai theme and charge premium on food. Folks, I prefer taste, courteous staff, hygienic, peaceful environment while eating out. And unfortunately, Umerkot comes as a big blot on those aspects. If you like watching movies of the doubles, and not the real stars-meaning you loved Ramgarh ke Sholey more than Sholey, Umerkot is a good choice. Also, if you had come there a day before, possibly you could have expected fresh food!

Mutton curry was the highlight of that Day

Although, I went here a couple of months back, I remember almost everything, especially the mutton!! It was a very small team outing and I was a little disappointed with the ambiance to start with and unfortunately this disappointment continued throughout, thanks to the seats we were offered. We went for lunch and the seats offered to us made sure that the sun is hitting on us throughout our stay there.

But as disappointing as it was, the food made up for it (well somewhat). We chose a buffet and the soups were served on the table, nothing to write home about..the starters were also pretty passable at their best. The highlight though was the main course. I loved the chicken, and the fish (although it felt stale to one of my Keralite colleague) Maybe I like stale :/ The chicken biriyani was really good, but what I loved the most was their mutton. It was so..umm...serene..! The taste was so perfect, it wasn't something that would jump out on you, not too spicy..nothing too fancy. It was soft and very well cooked (something that matters a lot when its mutton, I have had mutton in Bangalore which is so hard to chew, I feel like throwing up). The pieces would just melt in the mouth. If I remember correctly, this is what I said when I had the first bite.. "Mmm, one of the best mutton I have had in Bangalore..!!" ..and that impression still stays.

I'll revisit and see if they can improve my impression on everything else. If not, I'll still have one of the best mutton curries in the town..!

Good Ambiance and Service, food-not so great..

We had heard about Umerkot from our friends who are regulars at this place and kept telling us that we have to try the Murg Kothmari there, so we finally thought, So why not give it a try?...So, that is how we went to Umerkot. Just as we entered, we were shown good tables and there was quick and efficient service, the interiors were well done with some beautiful hindustani music playing. Some complimentary namkeen was served with a mango dip, which was ok. Of the only two soups available, we went with the tomato and carrot soup, which was a bit sweet for our liking, but the starter of Bhatti Da Murg, which is basically chicken thighs cooked in a tandoor to perfection, made up for it all. It was tangy and tasty and liked by all. For main course,we ordered Chicken Kothmir,i.e, chicken thighs cooked in a minced meat gravy, this was suggested by our friends and was much liked by all. We had butter naan and chilly cheese kulcha, both of which were really tasty, the chilly cheese kulcha was really good, the cheese not over-powering and the chilly was just perfect, not too spicy. The last item we ordered was gosht biryani, which was a ghost of the original biryani, it was too dry, the rice felt undercooked, and there was barely any masala in the biryani, but the mutton was done just fine. Just this much food cost four of us Rs 1650, which we felt is much more that what we would have paid in Angeeti( which would have served us awesome biryanis). This is a pure case of how appearances can be deceptive!!

Fair but uninspiring

I went to Umerkot for the buffet lunch today, after reading a lot of good reviews on Burrp on it.

The buffet spread and pricing was good, with a lot of options for vegetarians. The food was palatable however was overall uninspiring. The dishes didn't have that inherent quality that make great restaurants stand out from the rest of the crowd. The Laal Maas (Lamb) was better of the lot. The dessert spread was way too thin and the pastry offered was as hard as toasted bread!

The ambiance too was all too common with the same old same old Mughlai/Indian Cuisine decor. I particularly found the cushion seating and the table to be not very ergonomical.

Overall the word that comes to my mind again and again for the place is Uninspiring.

It fluctuates in its service....

The buffet is good... it has good amount of selections and you will enjoy the desserts...

Inspired by the buffet, went for al-a-carte the next day, and was disappointed ... The food was not upto the mark, tasted a bit stale...

The service was also a bit lethargic, as if they are doing a great charity by serving you the food...

Hype and just that

Went to this place for a birthday lunch!! Came out very very disappointed!!
To start with we were sitting in the extended Umerkot which looked like an old Garage converted into Restaurant. The AC was not working very well and this Garage!! sorry i mean extended section of Umerkot was very very noisy!!! So if you are looking for ambience this is not the place.
After we settled down we were told that soup and main course will be served on the table! then these guys forgot!! the soup came after 10-15 mins!!!
The food was OK though nothing outstanding!! I heard that the Veggie section was not even OK!!
Buffet for 2 cost around 700..which i think does not match the quality of food

Dear pubzd,

Since you are not able to differentiate between a garage and a restaurant... Good luck to you.

Really bad food.

We went to Umerkot for the lunch buffet on a Wednesday. The food was very stale and the service pathetic. When we complained for the food and asked for the A la carte menu instead, they refused to serve us. The staff was really rude and we had to walk out.

Not good value for money, unless

Well... the first time i went to this place was with a group of people for a bday treat... the place has a nice ambience, but when we wanted to order, they talked abt not being able to serve buffet to us because not all of us wanted a buffet... so all had to have a buffet... and mind you the food is prepared fresh and served hot and is worth the money you pay for a buffet...

So aft that i went with my family a few weeks later... we went for dinner and since there was no buffet we had to order food... and the quantity is miserable to say the least... and esp when you see the price you are paying for it...

so In short...

Go for their buffets... or else get rdy for a Big bill for Small qty of food...

Super Valentines day

I booked a table at Umerkot for dinner to take my wife out for that day. I had booked a table for 9pm. I reached there at sharp 9pm. My table was ready, there were a lot of people waiting and I was glad I booked. I got a nice table. The waiter offered us some red wine a special price, since it was valntines day. The wine was good. We ordered some fantastic starters which were served to us in 10 mins. The restaurant was very noisey, maybe because of the high number of people.
We ordered some curries and kulcha for dinner and they were very good. The service was very pleasing and friendly.
We had a great valentines day at Umerkot.

consistant

For some reasons, I love this restaurant. Honestly, I have not tried the menu in its entirety; however, I have never got a chance to go beyond the wonderfully marinated kebabs.
The service is prompt with no extra flamboyance.
The decor is neat and not overtly posh.
The food is well made. The kebabs are just too good for the price.
The restaurant is a paradise for nonvegetarians like me, who swear by the Indian taste.
If you want the runofthemill fare, this is not the place to dine or to be compared with.
I guess this place prides itself in demonstrating what its chef can create best, period!!!

I have been here many a times and I do not regret it at all.

slow and bad does not win the race

Went there for a family lunch and ordered a la carte. The service was extremely slow. The veg started arrived when the non veg ones were over. About one hour after placing the order we enquired about our order - and were told we will get it soon. Finally it arrived - the only thing worth talking about was the veg biryani. Everything else was very average ( Or below average) run of the mill stuff. The achari chicken tikka had so much salt that anyone will get high BP! I have no idea why they charge so much for stuff that tastes better and comes faster anywhere else. Overall - awful experience - not worth recommending to anybody at all.

Creative Buffet

I took my team out to Umerkot for lunch yesterday. To my pleasant surprise, they have started a buffet for lunch.
RS.299 per head and a 10 % discount since my group was above 10. The food was good, they have added a lot of salads as part of the buffet. The food is primarily North Indian except for the salads and the desserts. A great offering for the price.

I still think that their menu card items still rock. However for the price, I think the quality of food is better than Barbeque Nation's piddly tiny morsel of so-called barbeques.

My loyalty is always with Umerkot

Mughlai-e-khazana

Excuse me for trying my hand (mouth actually) at names very Mughlai, but this is one place where in spite of having the buffet served at the table, I liked everything and didn't feel disappointed I couldn't go a la carte (although I did crave for it later since this was pretty good by itself). I visited the the place with colleagues for a birthday lunch, and since it was a weekday, we had to make do with the sitdown buffet. The first thing that you notice is that the place isn't overly decked up and isn't loud with the decor. Nothing very Mughlai about it, yet it's extremely pleasing and it's almost as if you're somewhere else (you certainly forget that you came through the traffic in Koramangala).

There are 2 menus for this buffet: Jasmine and Lotus, with the difference being the former has an extra non-veg starter and non-veg side dish for the main course. We started off with a tomato shorba, which although yellow in colour (I wonder why), it tasted very good. Among the starters (2 veg and 2 non-veg), the mutton sheekh roll was decent, while the chicken was good. I didn't care too much for the veg sheekh kabab, but the crispy potato cutlet was very good (this from the guy who doesn't like potato too much). However a sad aspect about the service came to the fore here. We were a group of 13, and so it was obvious that the plate of starters they were serving from could get exhausted before they finished serving all 13. However, they didn't have another plate ready, and when one dish was over, they'd move over and serve the next one, leaving some people without the previous one. The item that wasn't served was then served almost at the end, after all the starters were done. That was annoying at the very least, and terribly disgusting at the most, and I hope they fix that soon.

For the main course, a basket of naans and parathas are served along with a mixed veg curry (which was very good), a paneer dish (which wasn't bad, but I've had better), a mutton dish (one of the best I've had in a while) and a chicken dish (again, very good). The usual yellow dal was there, and after the breads came the veg pulav. The pulav wasn't bad, but neither was it something that made you sit up and take notice. But I guess that's to be expected when it comes to a buffet. For dessert, it was the usual Indian combo of gulab jamoon and vanilla ice cream.

The buffet food was good, which only makes me that much more eager now to go a la carte. However, I just wish the service improves, not just getting over the serving fiasco I mentioned earlier, but things like getting water when the it's over (I seem to be getting hit a lot these days with this water not being served when your glass is empty). Parking could be an issue as they don't have valet parking, and so you'll have to parallel park on the main road, or find a spot in one of the side roads. So in a nutshell, great food, very nice setup inside, and if they can only improve on the service part, 5 stars all the way baby. Definitely a place to visit.

wonderful experience

I have been to many restaurant, but this one stole my heart. It was my wife's bday. I booked a table in advance and requested them to do something special.
We reached the restaurant around 8.30pm and was given a nice table near the kitchen display. As soon as we sat, my wife was presented a nice bouquet and all the restaurant staff came to wish her. She was completely taken aback. The food was superb. We ordered some tandoori prawns and rara gosht for dinner. Later she was given a cake and all he staff again came to sing a happy bday song. Overall a great feeling for me and my wife. This is the best in hospitality that I have seen.
After this 5Star experience, I think this place deserves for the most value for money restaurant. The bill for 2 of us came to Rs.900.

Good food, good pricing, great service and cosy ambience.

highly recommended for good food and good hospitality.

Great value buffet

I have been to Umerkot often, however edcided to try their lunch buffet last Friday. I was with a collegue of mine, thus decided to give the buffet a try.
The buffet is priced at under 300 rupees. Good selection of salads and starters on the buffet. The main food is served at the table and the dessert is again on the buffet. My thoughts:

Food: Good ( variety and spread quality )
Selection: 6 Non Vegetarian items with fish too.
Service: Crisp
Ambience: As always

I honestly think that places like Umerkot really works well to do value based offerings. A typical spread like this at any hotel would work at double the price.

For the quality of food and variety that they offer, I personally think it is great value.

Thay are great when it comes to their menu dishes, it matched 5star quality but reasonabl prices.

kudos to the food

As recommended by one of my ex-boss. I decided to take my clients to Umerkot. I is located in a seemingle old fashioned white buiding on the 80ft road. The restaurant is on the groud floor with rooms above and a wine store on the ground level. I was greeted by a gentleman and taken to my table near the bar. The wine list was offered and we chose to go for the good old KF. The menu looked impressive and lavish.
The starters ordered were kebabs ( mutton, chicken and paneer)... Highly impressive, tastewise and everthingwise. This is definitely the best kebabs had yet, in Bangalore. We went slow with drinks and kebabs and then decided to order for some food! Kofta, Chicken Kothmiri and Nihari along with Ulte Tawe ka paratha and Gilafi Roti. All of us loved the food. The service was attentive, we avoided the dessert. The place has a subtle interior, we a rich feel. The seating at the bar was not the most comfortable, yet overall I would rate the place as MUST VISIT for its food. I found the pricing great for the quality of kebabs.
Thumps Up to this place.

You cant beat their kebabs....

The kebabs at Umerkot just blows me off. It is a Non vegetarians paradise. Believe me, for the price, the quality of the kebabs that are served at Umerkot beats the best in Bukhara.
My every visit there makes me a bigger fan of the place. An elegant place with no on-your-face givings and crisp service.
The only negative is that it take few visits to get the direction right.

a comment.....

As I had just finished drafting my review, I happenned to notice another review by ssray23. Very interesting, he seems to like Umerkot too. I am sorry to barge in... I happened to have done a bit of a study on biryanis. And thus I would would like to comment........ there are around 23 styles of making biryani in India alone, the style which our friend seems to be referring to seems to be the Awadhi one. However there is a style called Dilli biryani which resembles the one that hey serve in umerkot ( i donno whether the chef there is aware of it) and finally it is all a matter of taste. Lazeez is good for some and Umerkot is good for some ( like me)

By far, one of the the best Indian restaurants have I have been to. Loved the hospitality and the food. The food was not too spicy, but had beautiful flavours, that you dont get in the restaurants in London.
I am glad that my friends took me to this place. I give this place a 5 star.

Amazing Biryani

I have visited Umerkot for lunch often and tried their buffet, which I found to be good. But my last vist was for dinner. They have only an alacarte for dinner. We tried some chicken starter and paneer, both were extremely good and much better than the lunch buffet offering. The main dishes were also of very superiour taste. I loved the kofta dish in particular. The service is very quick. Our experience of dinner was wonderful. The dinner billing was higher than lunch, but with the food we had I thought the experience was very good.

Paisa vasool oota

Just returned from lunch at Umerkot.Went with the team. Had to wait 25 mins as we had not booked ( did not expect that). Nice place, had heard a lot from friends, thus was excited at this chance.
Very nice chaat, salads and yummy fish fry with tandoori chicken, the paneer tikka was melting soft. All of us freaked out on the starter buffet. We were very full by the end of it. The main course was served to us, but I dont think we ate much of that as we were stuffed beyond comfort. Still, I binged on the chocolate pasties and ice cream, cant hold my sweet tooth.
The place is not very big and was really crowded. It was funny to see people standing in line for the buffet like they are standing to give votes.
I think I shall come over again for dinner, as there menu looks very tempting.

Food: Great
Service: Good
Vallet Factor: Decent
Overall: Value for money

They serve buffet only for lunch and dinner is alacarta.

Highly recommended.

Excellent recommendation by a friend of mine. I visited this place last week with a few clients from South Africa. The starters, lamb and chicken was outstanding. Chicken Kothmiri and Dal Makhani was fantastic. My clients were bowled over by the quality of the food. According to them, great food and a great restaurant.

Worth the price

Lotsa reviews and a long pending visit. We booked at Umerkot for dinner.Initial raection; cool place, calm feel and stylish. Got confused by the menu, as I saw no price. later I discovered that it was written in words. The waiter suggested a few kebabs and claimed that I would like them. Chose to order a tandoori broccoli and a chicken kebab. They were indeed good. Then ordered a black dal and the highly recommended nalli and a fish curry with naan. The black dal and nalli was fantastic, but the fish dish was average. The service was very good. The waiter noticed that we were not enjoying the fish, so he offered a replacement, which we declined. The best part was that the waiter refused to charge us for the fish since we did not like it. Good gesture. The place was full and a bit noisy with kids running all round. The bill came to around 900 for 2 of us and child. We did not order drinks. The quality of food and the quality of professional service is definitely a plus for this restaurant.

Very Good

I am in Bangalore atleast 4 times a month and inevitably end up eating outside during these times. I am a diehard fan of North Indian food-what to do!!!. I was recommended Umerkot by a business collegue on my last visit. Though I could not make it then, I decided to give it a shot this time.
Pleasant feel and small place is how I would describe the place. Apparrently it is run by a Chef with a long list of 5star experience.
I ordered Khad Murg, Mushroom Kebab... what a feel, Then I ordered Nihari and Baingan along with Paratha. The meat had all the taste of the masalas and the baingan was truly superb.
The breads were a regular fare... I would not rate it as extraordinary.
The kulfi at the end was another killer.
A great recommendation and shall truly patronise again.

a great dinner place

I have been to Umerkot many a times in the past and had very good experinces.
My team and me went there again this friday. Relaxed, weekend ahead, time to start drinking too.
We had all the time in the world to enjoy the amazing kebabs that they serve. Murg ki Chaan, murg afghani, sheekh kebab ( i tell you this one is the winner) and so on.
We had mostly kebabs and the ended with mutton biryani. I can easily vouch that they serve the best mutton biryani in town. Overall I think that they serve the most amazing kebabs in this part of the world and each kebab tastes completely different to the other. Amazing work there!!!!

If you love kebabs , this is the place to be.

Nice ambience n great food.

Been with family and found the ambience, service and quality of food very good. Upmarket and gratefully free of wailing children and loud families.Always keep them out.

Vegetarian food was good though the green chutney on the table was very spicy and the Kairi dal had no semblance of the mango. Actually the kairi has to be grated or in thin slivers and put kutcha on top of the dal to get that taste and tang. Music choice very limited. Kailash khair's moaning is not exactly cheering while having food. Instrumental film music from the B&W era would be great. The wine shop--- nearby is also a bonus. Place where you could take your snooty or brown sahibs to.-----R S Raman.

Deserving place

Went to Umerkot with cousins and family, last Saturday. This was my first visit here, although I have heard good reviews of this place till now.It has good ambience and very stylish menu.I had not booked and the wait was for 20 mins. While we waited they were courteous to serve us water and soft drinks, which I thought was a good gesture. The place was crowded and a bit noisy, maybe it was a weekend. We were 8 of us anr ordered some tikka and kebabs with our drinks. We liked the taste. There was a chicken kebab that I though could have been better if it was a tad bit more spicy. The vegetarian sheek was very good.
We ordered some curries, roti and biryani. The paneer was very soft, the roti was Ok, but the biryani was brilliant.
The service was very nice and our server was very courteous.
I would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for very well made Indian food at reasonable rates. The chef keeps moving around checking with people about the food.Very good.

Great food at a great discovery

The other day a friend of mine suggested that I visit this restaurant called Umerkot in Koramangala. The foodie that I am, for of us went there this Wednesday.
The feel is relaxing, not extravagent.
The staff have a pleasant smile on here face, which is very soothing.
The menu is not run of the mill........wow!!!
For starters we tried TohfaeZameen(Minced Yam tikkies), Bhindi Chaat and Murg Afghani - Verdict ( Brilliant)
For main course we had Nihari Gosht, Saag wadi, Achari Baingan and Dal Makhni - Verdict ( Each dish had a unique flavour and the cooking was impeccable. They tasted great with the Ulta Tawe Ka paratha and Laccha paratha)
WE skipped dessert, as we were too stuffed... but I assume that they are great too.... I need to try the Angoori Rabdi on my next visit.

Overall a great discovery and the food is in par with the best I have had.

Great job Guys

Best Yet

I am on my efforts to try all the restaurants that have been highly recommended by my friends. I am not really a curry liking person, as I have allergies to chilies. However I decided to try Umerkot. It took us around 20 mins to find the place, as we were not too clear with the directions. This is located in an old looking building. Again I liked the feel as I entered. There is a wine store at the entrance and one could pick a bottle on the way out. The restaurant is not a huge hall, but has its own private corners. The lighting and theme was not Indian, but modern. The menu was interesting. We ordered some wine and a few kebabs. The spices were just right and too good to taste. This is probably the best kebabs that I have tasted. The mint chutney was a bit spicy and the server was prompt to get me a different chutney and it was all good. The place is a bit closed and feels small for the airy Bangalore; however the food makes it up for all. I did not try any other food but freaked on the kebabs and I give it a 5 out of 5.And indeed I picked up a bottle of Alsace on my way out.

Service par excellance

I have been to many restaurants and have never reviewed any. But my experience at Umerkot has forced me to compliment the people there for their superb behaviour.
I had been there with my inlaws and my kids. Inlaws are aged and partially incapacitated to move freely. As we walked in, few of the staff rushed in to help. We were given a very comfortable sofa seating. My inlaws were asked if they could have something special made. One of the staff was entertaining my kids. I was so overpowered by their hospitality, that I honestly could not focus on anything else.
The food was excellent... food low on spice was got in for my inlaws.... I think all the other places should get a training on hospitality from this place.I could not raelly focus on the food myself. However, I shall definitely revisit in a more confortable state to try the menu effectively.

Good job

Perfectly Consistent

Last night I took my colleagues and a client out to Umerkot. I have always enjoyed the food and hospitality at this place. Umerkot maintained its reputation and we all had a pleasant time. The kebabs are amazingly prepared and am yet to taste anything similar in Bangalore. Being a comparatively small place, the efficiency of the service personnel is highly appreciated. This time, it felt great to have Chef Sanjay Tyagi himself take our orders. This place is definitely a benchmark for many upcoming places.

Very smartly done up...they have salads and starters on the buffet ( very appetising ), the main course gets served to you and desserts are again on the buffet.
I think I filled my stomach only with the salads and starters... they were too good.. I love fish and the fried fish was yummmmm!!
I think the buffet was great value for money with some of my collegues downing the free beer, since it was friday afternoon. No trash, plain simple good food and salads.

The dinner menu is different.... I would say.... more classy... but ofcourse for a higher price.

Nice Place

Read the previous posts and decided to try out Umerkot. Followed the advice and tried a few kebabs. Excellent is the only word for my experiece. The interior and ambience is a bit understated, but I guess it doesn matter. The service is prompt. I was informed that the menu is done by Chef Sanjay Tyagi, who happens to have worked with the Leela and Hyatt. I think it showed in the finesse of the food quality.
The biryani did not seem like the Dum style, however it was one of the best that I have ever had.
The most interesting twist is the Tandoori Pineapple. It is different and good.
Overall I would rate it as one of the places that you should visit for a good Indian dinner.

Refreshingly great

I have been to Umerkot many a times. I have been reading reviews on burrp about many restaurant. I have had a wonderful lunch today at Umerkot, thus thought I shall register and blog my reviews on one of my favourite restaurant.
Umerkot has started a crisp and elegant lunch menu which is actually a followon of their previous lunch set menu. The soup is served on the table, salads and kebabs are on the buffet ( around 15-18 ) of them, the main course is served on the table and the dessert is again on the buffet. It is 299 per head with beer and the spread has become surprisingly more elegant and even more value for money.
We were 15 of us and the non vegetarians got fish, chicken, mutton for a feast. The restaurant should pay me a commission for promoting the place, however, I indeed love this place and I always think highly of it. I think it is great value for money when compared to places like samarkhand or Sahibsindh sultan.

have fun

Fine Food

We were there with my customers and colleagues on Friday last. The parking is on the road with valet assistance. As soon as you enter there is a store that sells imported wines-now that is a splendid idea!!
Ok. We occupied the the table as given. Th restaurants looks good. The menu was interesting. We had heard a lot about the kebabs, thus ordered the same with our drinks. The kebabs were excellent. The sheekh kebab is the best i have had anywhere. The food on the whole was very good and I thought worth much more than what we paid in Northern Gate the previous day.The food was splendid.
The only negative is that one does not get the frills of ambience as a five star and this is a factor while entertaining some guests. The service was smooth. But good standalone restaurants like these offer great value for companies like ours who have to entertain clients and also look after our valets. Umerkot is definitely in for show off Indian food to my clients.

Good lunch spread

Went there with my collegues for lunch.I liked the place, it is not closed in on you. The starters and salads on the buffet was good. I loved the chicken curry. I think the place had a very good value lunch in place. I was not too impressed with the pastry though.
A good place to go for lunch and well within the budget.

Very Good Package

Good ambience, menu of high taste, raesonable pricing and pleasant staff. That is my feedback of Umerkot. I have been visiting Umerkot since the last 3 years, many times with family and many times with business clients. I have always felt that this is the best destination for high quality Indian fare.I prefer this place because they serve as good food as any good restaurant in many star hotels and it is still not that heavy on the wallet. The place lacks the suave of a star hotel and the glitz, but if it is food and service that you are going for, this is definitely the place. They have of late made the restaurant look even more classy, which I think is a good change to the plain tables before. Some of the kebabs are stunning, the fish tikka is average. But still a great bet over many in that area.

king again........

Umerkot, my fav restaurant, hosted a Punjabi menu last month. My chance to visit this place yet again. One thing that continues to always ring is, how they they manage to make such fantastic kebabs. I tell you, the only reason one should rave about Umerkot, is that they are the king of kebabs. The only other place that serves you similiar kebabs is probably the ITC hotels. For the price, the quality of kebabs is mindblowing. I end up paying 4 times more to eat something similiar at the 5 star joints.
May be my judgements are biased towards the non-vegetarians. Whatever be the case............. they make the best kebabs...period!!!

disappointing!!

having heard a lot about this place, we headed to this place last weekend. but i must say i was disappointed BIG time. i think this place is extremely over rated. and certainly it is not fine dining. i really think it is a glorified version of the many darshini's in bangalore. the restaurant doesnt look clean the moment you enter it and you can see the chefs cooking without any hand gloves on. the plates are cold , made me think if that they had not been sterilized. The starter, fried bhindi was ok, extremely oily though ( i know it is supposed to be deep fried!). I am not sure how any one can mess up on rumaali rotis. it was so hard more like a paratha. dal makhani was not tasty at all. overall i was extremely disappointed. i don't think it was worth spending 800rs for 2 ppl for darshini style food!!!

Good option

Visited Umerkot, on popular demand from the team. Overall a very good experience.

Plus: Good food and service
Minus: Small place and difficult to locate
Verdict: Go there if you really love good north Indian food but do not expect the fanfare of a fancy place.

Good Food, but lot of waiting time

This restaurant is just next doors to our place. The food here always has been very good. However, they used to have one particular dish called khad murg and that used to my favorite. Unfortunately they have discontinued that.

Now the negatives. We waited almost 35-40 min for the starters. Once the starters were finished we waited another 15 min for the main course. And then when we got the bill, we found a discrepancy. We pointed it out and got a revised bill. We found another discrepancy. The fellow said that system and the menu have different prices ... well Why ?. And why in both the occasions was the price in the system higher than that of the menu ?

Come here coz the food is amazing, but make sure u check the bill

Good Food and vibe all around

The place has class with nice settings, the food is good and the vibe great. Now they server all kinds of wine, beer and other drinks. May be due to licensing of alcohol, it is on the expensive side.

The staff is attentive, but during peak times, the order take a while, they could add some more staff during peak hours to ease the waiting time.

I saw the chief chef Sanjay around, so it means, they do oversee the quality of food, which shows.

Overall a good experience.

Mughul-e-Burrp :)

Caught up with so many of my old friends / colleagues after a long time and I suggested we should go to umerkot based on the burrp reviews. Believe me, they were all very happy looking at the place.
This place is built on mughlai theme. Akbar, the Mughlai king was born in Umerkot and that’s how, this restaurant got its name and theme.
They've tried to give a royal touch by making the floor shiny too apart from the lighting and the hangings

All of us, straight from work, headed to our table which was booked in advance. The settee was apt for us to relax after the hectic day. We started ordering our drinks and starters and just could not wait them to get on to our table. We were all damn hungry

The drinks were the usual. The corn and the chicken starters were good and the masala papad had had 3 small papads per plate. There was also a complimentary Papdi with a unique chutney. It tasted very different and yum :)
The main course was the rotis, kulchas, naans with subz jugalbandi which had all the English vegetables more than the Mughlai with mughul masala. The Dal Makhni was cooked to perfection. The non-veggies loved chicken to the core. It left them wanting for more….

Desserts – Gajar and Khajur ka halwa and the Gulab Jamoon were out of the world!!

For the 7 of us, the bill was 5.5K

Overall a good experience and recommended for a different dining experience

Excellent Kebab Experience

I went to Umerkot based on the great reviews of their kebabs. I was impressed. It is strange that I have not known this place in my last 4 years in Bangalore. I had the Murg Afghani Tikka, One Prawn Kebab and Gilawati Kebab. I am honestly impressed by the flavours that came out of them.
It is definitely not one of the many passable restaurants.....and it looked like they take their food seriously. The curries were good, maybe not extraordinary. But.. I am taken aback by the kebabs... they were so good!!

Service and Ambience were good. If there are people who love kebabs, this is the place, definitely.

Hole in the pocket.. I dont think so, for the quality.

Hyped!

I was wanting to try this place after so many great things I had heard about this place. Perhaps, the reviewers were in too jolly a mood. I am not a fan... but you may want to give it a try.

Food is average. Only one special rice item for the vegetarians. What happened to the varieties in rice?

The service is good. The folks are on time and served well.

The ambiance is not well captured in all parts of the restaurant.
The restroom is inadequately spaced and positioned.

Nice place for Dinner

I have visited Umerkot 3 times till date. First was when I took my wife, then GF, there for Dinner. The Staff was courteous, the place is amply lit for a romantic dinner. The food was great, though a bit pricey. Especially, the drink made with coconut water and the pineapple fried dish were superb and unique. The north-Indian fare was just average. Ambiance was great. The second occasion was when a friend invited me for a lunch there. This time food was bad, service was pathetic. A couple of months back we again went there for dinner. We liked it this time.
Verdict is: The place is expensive. Avoid lunch at this place. But good for a candle-lit romantic dinner. There is no parking. You have to park your car on the roadside.
On all 3 occasions the bill came to around Rs 600 per head.

Good ambience

Food: The starters were impressive. nice soft chicken kababs.
The main course did not rise to expectations. The biryani was "below-average" and so was the signature chicken dish.
They have a good wine catalogue and do not serve beer / hard liquors.
Service and Ambience: Good.

Best Biriyani in town?

had heard a lot about this place and decided to check it out over the weekend. A good turnout for dinner inspite of the downpour suggested that wait might be worth it after all.
Nice decor and good space inside (although some brash foreigners were bent upon making sure that everyone in the restaurant heard what they were sayting). ordered the chicken reshmi kabab and the chickent biriyani. the kababs were ok - nothing great but ok....no melts in your mouth stuff.
had to wait for the main attraction - the chicken biriyani. at first sight you could make out that it was going to be a let down. the rice had been overcooked and the individual grains looked like they had been mashed partially. now, as any biriyani connoisseur will tell you, the individual rice grains should not stick together like in a khichidi! the chicken pieces tasted like they had been prepared for some other dish (some kebabs maybe) and the rice just didn't have the flavor of the biriyani. oh man....such a let down. can't imagine how the biriyani at this place has got a good rating. at best the biriyani was like a chicken pulao!

Bangalore.....still waiting for some restaurant to better the biriyani of samarkhand!!

Landed here with my family and friends on a weekend and found a place soon enugh. Nice starters, especially non-veg as we are the same by choice! The Raan and the layered chicken dish are amazingly good. The biryani took forever and was not top of the line. Could have been better. Service was good and the bill did not make me choke. Would recommend the place definitely for NWF food. Good stuff...

Best biryani in town! Oh Yes

I was at Umerkot this tuesday and I also happened to read the reviews in this blog about Umerkot. I have been working in kitchen at various 5 star hotels since the last 17 years.

I tasted a few kebabs and also tasted the Biryani, but the Lamb Biryani.

A Biryani by muslim culinary tradition is made with mutton....... I wonder why a few critics try their gourmet skills by tasting chicken biryani ( maybe they have redifined the definition after attaining inspirations from the modern age concoctions).

I tried the Murg Ki Chaap and Gosht Laccha Kebab for starters.......... trust me, they were awesome. The kebabs were juicy, no hint of any colour and each of the kebabs had an distinctive individualistic taste.

The Biryani was unbelievable. The style was very Delhi type, a fusion of Lukhnavi and Hyderabadi. The meat was definitely cooked with the rice, as similiar tastes flowed through.

There are close to 47 styles of preparing a biryani and I wonder how one can have a single image of the same in ones mind.

Awareness and knowledge is very important before comments are passed, else they do not get taken seriously.

Stale Food

We tried this place a while ago so this review is based on that experience. We were 4 of us and had a pretty bad experience with the lamb gravy which tasted funny and subsequently all 4 of us had bad stomach's! Service was rather slow and dishes took eternity to come to the table. Biryani was a pan tossed mess and meat was rather tough. I hope they have corrected their mistakes or else nobody is going to visit them again.

Worst Ever

Review for a vegetarian group of 5 people. We went on a Sunday afternoon for buffet. I wish I could rate this restaurant minus 10. Worst ever restaurant of my life. Worst ever booking service, worst ever customer service, worst ever food, and here comes the strangest and the best part- worst ever 'special' customers (one of the the residents of this hotel who eats regularly at this restaurant) that have an ego the size of a continent. We only had a problem with food until this customer vehemently objected to our objection and ended up creating an unwanted scene - Now comes the tip of the ice berg- There is no manager to manage this feud - Waiters say he has gone out in his duty hours. I wish I could paste this same feedback every day until I hear an apology from the right people responsible. We could not tolerate the stale starters and hence, could not eat beyond starters and walked out except that customer did not let us walk out politely. Enough Said.

Super se bi Upar--- Umerkot

We went to this place on Christmas day last year with our office crew and lovely and beautifully decorated. Loved the ambiance of the place but the only down side is that the music in the place it just is so bad it spoils the mood.....indeed you would lose your appetite if you get too involved with the music....

Have heard so much about their kebabs which are very unique and staff being very friendly, they personalize the menu as per our requirement.....But we went for the lunch buffet here and it is sure shot value for money if the office is paying......The spread of starters were .. aloo tikki, fresh green salad, tandoori gobi...not too much there to say.....hot n spicy soups just one of veg n non veg..... Then comes the roti platter with the sabzi and gravy and dal... then the pulao/biryani. All were good.. but not too much variety.....The desserts blew me away, I had to fill myself with the desserts...... Phirni, rosogulla, angoori gulab jamun, ice cream. .. Will recommend it to friends if the work place is paying for it....

If you are going in with family and you have to pay then it is a little too expensive for the quantity of food on the buffet.....I would recommend all the food on the menu to try....If you are paying it is worth a try....

Disappoiting!!

After going reviews on different restaurents in Burrp, I found this place interesting and we went to this place last Sunday lunch. Number of items in the buffet is measly limited. Many items tasted average and no where near to the reviews said below. Most of the deserts were awful. Only the main course is saving factor in the complete lunch buffet. Service is one area where we are really baffled. The attending servers were irresponsive and on top of that they are not cordial. I do not recommend this place strongly for buffets.

I have been very regular to Umerkot and loved the food that they serve; not very spicy and of great quality. However two of my visits were not matching to my expectations and thus the frequency of my visits reduced.
I visited Umerkot last monday with some office colleagues. The food was back on the bang. Exceptional. They have introduced a few new items. There is a paneer kebab.. it would blow you off. The Nihar Gosht was wonderful.
Overall a great experience and it was good to see my favorite restaurant, on course.

ok ok type restaurant

Heard a lot but turned out to be just another restaurant. Starters were ok. We ordered kumb aur makai ki gilawat, Murg abeer, both were tasty. Drinks we ordered jaljeera, buttermilk and nariyal ki shikanji. Nariyal ki shikhanji was something I would never try again, rest of two were fine. Main course was something came as disappointment. First it took them almost 45 minutes to serve us with main course. We ordered murg sirce ka pyaz and mutton rara. Both not lived to the expectations. Veg we ordered palak paneer that also was just another drink. A/C was not working which made it difficult to gulp all this so so food. May be not the place I would wanna go again.

Yada yada yada ,,,

As you can see I can't be bothered to even come up with a review title for this restaurant. In my book this place falls in the 'over-hyped' category. We were here a few months ago seeing all the glowing reviews. The very fact that I remember hardly anything about the dishes we tried proves how forgettable the experience was. All I remember is feeling dissappointed at the end of the meal and thinking 'This is it?!'. It's just another high priced restaurant passing off average food as 'fine dining'. My local fast food place serves the same quality for half the price. The meats were tough and everything was either over seasoned or under seasoned. The 'nariyal ki shikanji' drink was so bad it deserves a special mention here. The service is poor. Our food took 45 minutes to arrive. The decor is jaded, nothing to write home about. The place is a bit cramped and lighting is poor. The air conditioning was either not working as expected or they were trying to cut costs. Anyway, I would certainly recommend this place. To my frenemies.

Does not live up to the expectations!!!

We went to Umerkot for dinner on a satieday after checking the reviews and ratings. Though the ambience was nice and warm the charm was spoiled by bad service. The waiters seemed to be laid back and reluctant. I had to call multiple times for order and any modifications. The food was served with long intervals and your idea of starter with drinks would go for a toss.
The food on the other hand was ok. We had Dal makhani and a paneer lababdar. The Dal lacked salt and paneer was fine. The food seemed to be overpriced. The mocktails were also boring.
Overall it was just ok experience given the name of the restaurant.
